Problem is, the author never came close to demonstrating that the killer was a peace activist, so her flipped scenario is a bit dubious. Not the strongest example of intellectual honesty I've ever seen.

Hi DC!

As far as her "intellectual honesty" ... well ...

Suicidal gunman ‘angry at the government’
By DAVID LEVINSKY
PhillyBurbs.com
7/6/2007 10:40:46 AM
The Pennsauken man who shot and wounded a member of the U.S. Air Force before killing himself left suicide notes that indicated he was “angry at the government and wanted to make a statement” on Independence Day, one of the man’s relatives said yesterday.

Matthew J. Marren, 22, of Walnut Avenue, drove to a home on Windsor Lane rented by Senior Airman Jonathan Schrieken, 22, at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Marren got of this vehicle, found Schrieken outside the house, shot him once in the chest

...

She said she did not know the exact wording in the notes, but said Marren was “mad at the government and wanted to make a statement … that’s why he did what he did on the Fourth of July.”

...

The circumstances and motive for the shooting were under investigation, Milavsky said yesterday. He confirmed the existence of two suicide notes, but declined to discuss the contents due to the ongoing investigation.

While we don't "know" the exact reason Marren shot the Airman, there are certainly some strong indications:

1.  Mad "at the government".

2.  Chose a military member to kill (who he did not personally know),

3. Does it on the 4th of July.

With the type of animosity and heated rhetoric bandied about concerning Bush, the war in Iraq, along with many left leaning leaders calling the US military "terrorists", "mercenaries" and such, I think it reasonable to assume that there is a strong likelihood that the murder was motivated by someone who was vehemently anti-war - and disturbed enough to do something more than talk about it.

Was he a "peace activitist"?  Well, he certainly followed through with actions that a lot of the hard left "peace activitist" would applaud (privately, at least).  So ... yeah, I think it's fair to use that term in a reverse analogy to make a point about how the media is biased a certain way.

The problem in Malkin's argument is that the PSYCHO WAS NOT A PEACE ACTIVIST.

Therefore, her comparison breaks down.

Her comparison only breaks down, farglebargle, until the war supporters are grasping at straws to support their unpopular position on the Idiocy in Iraq.  At which point, any irrelevant nonsense, posted by anybody, which
could conceivably be skewed (maybe) to justify US military operations in the middle east, is jumped on by
those who lack a reasoned or studied understanding of the situation to support their position.

I prefer women who use their heads as something other than a hat rack.

Perhaps it is the proximity to AnencephalyBoy, but the four you mention seem to grow more vacuous and
obtuse the closer they get to him.

Of course, there is ZERO EVIDENCE to support your OPINION, is there?

Nice going, attempting to link random violent nutjobs to the Anti-War/Peace movement, though.

So let's give it a better flip, DC, and just say that a crazy person who's illness manifested in patriotism rather than "anger at the government," tried to murder an anti-war protester on the 4th of July to make a statement.  Would that have made the news in a bigger way?

More "evidence" than you have for most of your opinions, FB.  Go back and read the number points I made in my post about it.

See, the thing is, just as I ended up discussing in the "Bush 2x ..." thread, you and some of the others are seemingly incapable of entertaining the possiblity that anyone else might have any shred of a valid point to any position that doesn't agree 100% with your own.

You exhibit the very blindness that Malkin is highlighting in her article.

THESE?

Well, apparently some EIGHTY PERCENT of the Population disapprove of Bush, Congress OR BOTH, so I would suspect, that YOU TOO, could be labelled "Mad at the Government", eh?

So, we've shot down point #1, let's continue.

quote:

2. Chose a military member to kill (who he did not personally know),

Yeah, that's something he did. Of course, it says NOTHING about his motivation, does it?

Perhaps, as a child, he was raped by an off-duty Marine, and was working out issues?

That's as valid a HYPOTHESIS as you offer, isn't it? In fact, since the idea of violence is sorta antithetical for a "Peace Activist", even more likely?

quote:

3. Does it on the 4th of July.

See above

quote:

Reasonable to assume there is a strong likelihood...

It's MORE REASONABLE TO ASSUME he was acting out against someone who reminded him of the child molester who raped him in his past, isn't it? I mean, that doesn't invoke the entire cognitive dissonance thing of tagging peace activists as violent extremists. Occam's Razor.

Well ... sure ... you don't get it.

My presupposition was that any reasonable person would understand ...

And your example of Occam's razor is exactly backwards.

hmmm ....

Why doesn't that surprise me?
