Well...it seems as if the tiniest member of my household has mono. Poor thing is just miserable. Extremely bad sore throat, 104 fever, runny nose, swollen glands, double ear infection. It'll all be confirmed by bloodwork results on Tuesday. I've spent the past four days with her just cuddling in my bed. She won't eat anything and only drinks water and some juice. She's getting Motrin to control the fever, Wellness Herbal Kids Immune Support by Source Naturals and Throat Care by NTI (last two from a very good health store near me). Any advice on keeping her comfortable?

I am sorry she is feeling so poorly. Treating the symptoms is about the most you can do. Don't worry if her appetite is absent for a few days (or more), as long as she drinks plenty of fluid. Cold fluid and soft foods like ice cream or pudding are best. Popsicles are great. Avoid acidic things like citrus or tomatoes, due to stinging the throat. Kids won't usually gargle warm salt water, like we tell adults to do, but drinking warm chicken soup will accomplish the same thing, if she will do so. If her throat becomes too painful to swallow liquids, call the MD immediately, as on rare occasions a throat abcess can happen. Does the MD recommend antibiotics for the ear infection? It used to be automatic, now there is a school of thought that suggests waiting to see if they resolve on their own. It would depend on what your doctor saw when he examined her ears. We did put her on antibiotics for the ear infections. Her body is fighting so many things that it was just overwhelmed. This is actually the first time in her four years that she's been on an antibiotic. She is never sick.

The only downside to having a wonderfully healthy child is that when she does get sick, it is just plain scarey. hugs Mono takes minimum of several weeks for full recovery. For most of that time, she should not be acutely sick, just droopy and tired and having poor appetite. The initial fever can last for 1-2 weeks, and a low grade fever may pop up again from time to time during recovery. Probably the 104 degrees is more due to the ear infection than the mono, and should drop to a more comfortable degree after the antibiotics have kicked in. It takes at least 24 hours for antibiotics to decrease pain, and at least 48 hours for antibiotics to eliminate the fever. Young kids often have fevers up to 105 degrees, which causes no harm at all, as long as the underlying infection is not a serious one. The fever itself is not harmful until over 107, and that is extremely rare. Hang in there. S

How about popsicles? The cold is soothing to the throat, but it still seems like a "fun" treat. Theoretically, the lab tests to confirm or rule out mono, and also strep throat which is also a possibility they probably tested for based on the symptoms you described can all be performed in well under an hour, it shouldn't take them till Tuesday to have results back to you. Did your doctor order the tests to be done stat? They usually do a throat culture to back up the Rapid Strep test to see if it's any other kind of bacterial infection. That would take several days to finalize. But they can tell you if it's mono very quickly. Poor wee one....no fun being sick in the summer! [>:]

I have Pedialite pops in the freezer. She hasn't even wanted them. By the time that I got out of the doctors office the labs were all closed today. I'll be there first thing Monday morning. He said he's probably have the results by the end of that day. Tuesday at the latest.

They usually do labwork round the clock, if your insurance will let you go there. And even if they won't for routine work, many times they'll cover it if it's ordered stat. But I'm sure your doctor would have suggested this if it were life-threatening. On the other hand, if she's already on antibiotics, there really isn't anything else they would give her if she did have it, it's just a waiting game of letting it run its course. In which case, Mom's TLC is the best [:)] (I wish you lived closer to me, I'd get you in and do the testing myself!)

Exactly...I'm hoping that she'll be feeling a little better when we go for the bloodwork. Nothing worse than watching the needle go in that little arm. 8(

Some warm tea with a little lemon and honey might help comfort her alittle. Edit-- because I forgot to add - besides tea, chicken noodle soup always helped my princess when she had a sore throat.

Unfortunately, she has never liked tea or soup of any kind...which drives me nuts at dinnertimes

She probably just needs a lot of rest and sleep....Your snoring dog is not helping matters at all.

When my young one had a sore throat, I used to rub a little bit of vicks under her nose and on the outside of her throat. Somehow the combination of under the nose and on the throat provided a little bit of relief, it also gives the ears something to play with...Menthol is a wonderful soother. Will she suck on a menthol candy...not cough drop, but a candy? I also used to lightly swab her hears with a little peroxide which seemed to relieve some pressure. A good old fashioned Mustard inhalant thru the nasal passages would help the ears nose and throat.
