I'm curious to hear from women who have their nipples pierced and how they handle the yearly mammogram and physical exam their doc does?? Do you leave the jewelry in for the exam? Has it ever been a problem?

Thanks in advance for your input!!

You must remove all jewerly prior to having the mamogram done. If your piercings are too new to remove the jewerly you may want to consider delaying the procedure.

You will not be allowed to wear the nipple jewerly for your mamogram.

As LadyDestiny said the jewelry must be removed. Your piercer can put in a temporary stylet type thing that is acceptable according to my doctor if the piercing is to new to take out. One of the mamograms i had done was within three months of my piercing and i removed the jewelry and could not get it back in but went straight to my piercer and they got it back in and it had onlly been out a matter of a couple of hours.

I have seen loads of pierced nipples, and only a few with holes but no rings. So in my experience on the other end, most women leave them in.

Thank you for the responses. But what about the exam the doc does....you know the quickie breast massage. Do you leave the jewelry in for that also? Has anyone had a doctor that has advised against nipple piercing? I think I'd be a little embarassed to get a breast exam and have jewelry.

I pierced my girl's nips about 20 yrs ago so I've had a lot of experience with this. Unfriendly operators will tell you that you have to take them out for your mammogram. She/we believed that not long after I pierced her the first time and I took the rings out. Not long after the test I repierced and replaced them. Later, we found out that if a machine operator tells you they have to be removed, either that operator is too inexperienced to run the equipment with the rings/piercings in place, or they are prejudiced against piercings. Or, of course, some of both.

Later, the rings had to be removed for surgery to remove a very small lump. I had the dr replace them during/after surgery. During discussing it with him I noticed some bad attitudes on the part of a couple of the nurses. (The dr was great about the whole thing.) My girl gets tested regularly. Her rings haven't been out in over 15 yrs. Shop around. You'll find some unprejudiced equipment operators if you look.

Hope this helps.

I had both of mine done about 2 months ago. I didn't hurt as bad as I thought. The right one didn't hurt at all, and the left one was just like a pinch. They tell you 3-6 months for complete healing. Mine don't bother me at all now, and Master can suck and tease them, although not extremely hard! I never thought I would do it, but I'm glad I did, I love them. Now I'm thinking about other piercings!!

This thread might help, and in it there is a post with links to two other threads on nipple piercing.

before i had my nipples pierced 2 years ago, i had already had both my labia and my clitoral hood pierced. my nipples, due to my specific anatomy, had to be pierced very deep (my barbells are 7/8" long!!). unfortunately it has been 2 years, and they are still healing. i was told that they could take up to 5 years due to the depth of the piercing and my difficult anatomy. make sure you have 2 or 3 piercers examine the nipples before you make a decision. i love my piercings, don't get me wrong. but they still hurt and cause pain on a daily basis. i have been very patient with them, but my female slave/ fiance gets upset that she cannot play with them much. none of my other piercings gave me trouble at all.

as for medical exams...i am much too young for mammagrams...but as for the yearly stuff i have had no issues with my doctors performing a breast exam on me. usually after seeing my vaginal piercings, they find that the nipple piercings are much more "normal" than the others! i do get alot of questions asked about how they felt when done, and such...but that's something that i am used to answering, so it doesnt bother me.

good luck for those considering piercings.

My OB-GYN is perfectly nonchalant about my nipple and genital piercings, and she has never made me take them out, either for mammograms or examinations. In fact, she always insists on stretching my nipples all the way out, pulling on my rings and turning them through my holes to make sure they're completely healed and problem-free, even though she's been doing this for years and she knows they're totally healed. (She's a lesbian and a bit of a sadist, but a very sweet one, and she's one of the few people my masters trust to know all about me.) So i agree, it can be done, but it's your doc's call how to examine you, and some of them apparently just aren't comfortable with body jewelry. You could always inquire first and shop around for a "kink-aware" doc...

Shortly after I got my own piercings done (nipples and clit hood) I had to go in for my yearly. I was so worried about what would be said or if I'd be critisized. The Dr was very cool about it, she just asked how long I'd had them and if I was having any problems.

That's pretty much the same questions I get every year. Infact, 2 weeks ago I went in for my yearly and she just asked if I was having any problems and if I was planning on any more as a topic of conversation!

If the Dr is worth his or her salt and if they're professional, then you have nothing to worry about. IMO if they make comments that make you uncomfortable or critisize you for your modifications, then it's time to look for a new Doc.

My experience, with several different certified techinicians, at some very good facilities, is that they will require metal barbells, rings, etc., be removed prior to the mamogram. In fact, I've even been required to remove my gold chain which doesn't fall much below my collar bone. In no case have I felt the technician was inexperienced or poorly qulaified. In one case, I felt she was a bit put off by the fact I had piercings, but she was the exception.

There is no reason not to be comfortable with body jewelry with your physician. If you have an issue, you need to find a more accepting doctor. How are you going to talk about other issues concerning your health and well-being if you can't be open with your healthcare provider?

Thanks in advance for your input!!

many health care providers aren't aware of what you need and need not do. i had an mri and was told to take my rings out. i could not get them back in right after the procedure and had to basically have them done again. the piercer said you didn't really have to have them out, as that much metal won't affect the magnets. when i had mri's done this year, i insisted to keep them in, and all went well.

right after the piercings were done, my breast surgeon gave me some askew looks, but the breast exam was done with rings in. i plan to have them in for all ultrasounds and mammograms. i'm not going to go through that whole piercing thing again! if they want my money, they get my piercings. i even kept them on for surgery (not of the breast). they just taped some gauze over them pre-op. i'd have thought to keep them open would have helped; had they needed to open my chest, they could have just held onto the rings and pulled after they cut!

At the risk of sliding off-topic a bit...I've got 38 piercings, and the only medically-related problem I've had is the half hour lecture at the dentist shortly after getting my first tongue stud. After the second there was no comment.

I've had x-rays, not a mammogram of course, and didn't need to remove anything. I may need to have my eyebrow piercings removed prior to laser eye surgery next week, but only because the may interfere with the speculum used to hold my eye open.

As for an MRI...if they have an issue with the jewellry, then they'll have the same issue with the screws and staples holding my knee together. It's my understanding the magnetic fields in the MRI scanner don't get a sufficient grip on the stainless steel used in these applications.

I do know that it takes more than 38 to set off airport metal detectors...bit of a disappointment...was all primed for the full body search.

I have 4 piercings. 2 in each ear. Lame, I know.

Anyway, believe me, people in the medical profession have seen EVERYTHING, including a multitude of piercings. They don't even look twice at them. And anyone who would look a second time is probably intrigued by it, not repulsed or shocked. it's so commonplace today, it's really not even unique or unusual!

Don't worry about it.

A little side note....you wouldn't believe the things women do when they're having their pap! One woman stuck a paper heart down there for her appointment on Valentine's Day. Another woman waited until the doctor was actually doing the pap smear, she leaned up, called his name, and snapped his picture with the camera she had brought along when he looked up from between her legs! Every hairdo from totally shaved to full bush is seen, every day. A doctor at this same clinic used to make the speculum quack like a duck...usually with a brand new nurse in the room, who would practically faint.
