Since it's muscle and tendon at work, I'd simply say practice like you would any muscle you are trying to develop.  Force your mouth to stay open wider for longer periods every day.  Ball gags might be good.

TMJ is short for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.  It is basically a disorder where your jaw joint doesn't fit or function properly.  There can be many different symptoms including a locking of the jaw.  I have it (since birth) and my symptom is that my jaw "clicks" when I open or close my mouth a certain way.  My slave has it (also since birth) and she can't open her mouth very wide.  She can't use "regular" ball gags as the ball is too hard and too big.  Most kinky people I've heard talk about TMJ express having my slave's symptoms or something similar.  I'm not sure if you can give yourself TMJ unless you suffered some kind of jaw trauma or injury.  But I could be wrong on that.

Well hopefully if I go slow with the stretching I will get the results I want and not have to worry about TMJ.

I have TMJ from grinding my teeth at night. I can't have a ball gag in for long or even open my mouth wide for a long period of time without my jaw aching. I don't know if stretching your mouth open wide will do that or not....something to ponder tho.

My TMJ is worse when I chew gum...leading me to believe that it can be worsened by doing things to your jaw you shouldn't....such as stretching.  Please be careful, maybe consult an oral surgeon first.

I had a lady come in to the ER one day who needed an x-ray of her mandible.    Before I did the x-ray, I asked what happened.
She yawned, and her mouth locked open.   She could not close her mouth.

Please don't attempt to stretch your mandible open without consulting a physican first.

This sounds like good advice, I am not sure how one can safely
stretch their jaw.

Everything I've read suggests that jaws can't be stretched. Think about the anatomy involved. There's no soft tissue to be stretched, only the tendons, which aren't designed to stretch much. The only thing you can do is to learn to relax more if the jaw is being held unnaturally closed, but it is only going to go so wide no matter what you do, and after that, you've got problems. The posititon of the teeth is also a factor, and they can't be shifted either! It's a bit like putting yourself on the rack and expecting to get taller, lol

That happened to me once, but I was able to release the lock before I got to the point of going to the hospital.....it was like that for about ten minutes...I totally blame my TMJ.

It sounds to me like you want to stretch your jaw for reasons other than you have a physical discomfort or issue.
If you have a healthy jaw and want to expand how wide you can open your jaws I doubt that is possible.
The bones of your jaw connect much like puzzle pieces.
If you stretch the skin, muscle, ligaments and such then your jaw will not be able to hold together thus you'd dislocate your jaw.
I think doing this to play is not a physically healthy thing to do to your jaw & can only cause damage.
The jaw span is not designed to stretch beyond the range of motion your bones and joints permit.

I am with everyone who says TMJ is the suck. Don't risk ruining your perfectly healthy jaw just to be better at giving head, or being able to take a bigger gag, or whatnot (if thats actually the goal here), is what I say. TMJ HURTS. This would be me speaking from experience here. I got it from grinding my teeth, it set my jaw out of alignment and doing anything strenuous (from chewing gum to wearing a hard ball gag) makes it worse. If you are dead set on being able to open your mouth wider, talk to someone who knows their stuff, a doctor or dentist or something of that sort. But don't just start start your own happy regimen and expect it to be all good.
