I love my aerobics class. I do strength training the rest of the week, but Mondays I go to a class. I love it because:

1) It's a great workout. I'm just shattered right now.

2) I'm almost always the only man in the class. I kinda like it - all the ladies and girls kinda fuss over me - I like the attention.

3) The instructor mentioned to me privately that the class really stepped up in effort level when I joined - apparently the ladies in the class don't want to wimp out in front of me/a man. It is an interesting parrallel to something I saw at CORTRAMID (career training for Naval Midshipmen). That summer I had eight different platoons, the last two mixed platoons with female midshipmen. In the previous six platoons we would have a bunch of non-hackers ask for "training time outs" because they were scared of soemthing, it hurt, they were tired - blah blah blah. You would have four or five always crap out on rappelling.

When we had girls in the unit, not a single boy crapped out.

Anyway - hooray for aerobics!!

Interesting, sounds like all units should be mixed then.

I don't know.

I had a very positive experience with those young midshipmen - but career orientation (an adolescent developmental task moving to adulthood) is very different from warfighting in a small unit.

We don't have a lot of data on mixed combat arms units engaged in warfighting - I just don't know whether it is a good idea or not.

I certainly had a good experience with mixed units in training. About 1 in 4 cycles of Marine officers go through a mixed gender track. We had a female platoon at OCS, and then at The Basic School (TBS, the place where Marine Officers get basically trained) we had integrated squads. That was a good expereince for me, and I think it helped us as a unit to have more than one persepctive - the men and women each brought something to the table.

At the same time to, there was a lot of sexual tension, some sexual activity and pairing off - I shudder to think of that kind of internal unit tension in warfare.
