hi all,

I've just stared a fine woodowrking course, very very detailed and such using hand tools mostly....Anaywas, before i ramble on too much. I was thinking about makeing a collar out of wood, any indeas comments on the idea, tips?

Hi there,

The type of wood will be mostly preference. Harder wood will last longer, but beyond that it'll be a question of color (ebony, mahogany, cherry, ash, etc.)

You're going to want to consider how it goes on and off; perhaps a hinge on one side, a clasp on the other.

Good luck, and take photos of it when you're finished for us.

Hi Blindmage, your idea for a wooden collar sounds good, is it for restraint/punishment or for more decorative use?

Ebony would be far too hard to work, I'm definetly thinking hardwood, mabey paduk or jitoba, or some other tropical hardwood. I'll probably do a mock up in poplar to see if it actually works.

ya, i'm totally stumped on the hinge and clasp, i have a few ideas, it could just be in two parts and slip together, but it would definetly be just for looks then, I wanna have little to no metal at all in it.

Absolutely splendid idea. I don't think there's any advice I could give that you won't learn for yourself. I hope someday I can see samples of what you come up with, though.

having a 2 part collar, held together with a pair of tapered pegs, which would be set flush, and designed to be irremoveable would be a wonderful LT collar. as removl would mean destruction. It would be a wonderful way for an owner to show commitment to a sub, and remind a sub quite how permentant removal of a collar would be.

I too would love to see pictures of the finished piece

a permanent one is a bit too much right now, it's easier to make too. But i wanna try and make ones that are strong, pretty and able to be removed.

did a google search for wooden hinges, saw lots of viable options, just have to do them on a smaller scale....
curious about your method, are you carving or shaping the wood? i assume that because you're using hard woods you will be more likely to carve it...so how thick are you going to make them?...also with the method of the wooden hinges, i would think that you could take it on and off without too much trouble if you have the right tools...

i'm hoping i won't have hinges at all, i'm trying to figure out how to make it slide together, yet stay strong and look nice.

I was toying with a wooden collar a while back myself but put it aside for more urgent projects. You gave me an incentive to think about it some more. Good luck with the project, we'll have to compare notes once we are finished.

On thought, make an interlocking joint one side and use a dowel or bolt (yes I know metal) on the other side. I have a realy good design in my head, damn shame I am not a wood worker.. I would love to see what you come up with. and please dont forget to sand it...

One could also create dovetail joints of some kind as another method of joining the two halves. There's also the possibility of making wooden hinges or using some of the techniques from the venerable Japanese and Chinese master crasftmen who built furniture and other things of wood in the past (mostly using backsaws for nearly all of their cutting work from what I understand).

Best of luck to you in your project. It sounds fascinating to me of that I have no doubt!

Hi! Great idea for the collar. I wonder if steaming a piece and bending it to the approximate shape and then doing the fancy woodwork for looks and the joint???

If you simply cut it out of a piece of wood... where it s cross grain it will be weak and snap easily. You could laminate it or make it our of many pieces, all lengthwise to the grain and glue it securely together!

well, you could even improve on that for a quick and cheap prototype, get a tatting ring (what do they call them else?) at a flea market or rummage sale, and see what the issues are when inlaying on a curved surface, certainly it would be better to have it veneered than a solid piece that you work with.

A book on paddle building for canoes would be easily obtainable at the library, you need to bend strips and build layers and so on, so much of it would be transferrable, I suppose one could build it open with a dovetail or stair railing joint and then when you place it on her neck gorilla glue it and use string to hold it until it sets...........

I was at a Hobby Lobby store a few months ago looking for something and ran across what probably was a tatting ring hanging on the wall. No one knew what it was or how much to sell it for, so I gave them $1.00 My idea was to convert it into a wooden collar.
It is as you described, laminated and the grain is not an issue. I was going to use magnets for the lock, since this was not for security purposes but am still nor sure about the hinge.
I had forgotten about it but am now intrigued again and will have to think about it some more when I have the time.

Well I have wood... er .....a wooden collar. So I cheated... I'm a metal guy not a wood worker ;-) and this system has worked for my regular collars for 10 years. But instead of a pin, I used a 4-40 stainless steel screw and nut. I ground the nut smaller then recessed it into one half. The other half I just counterbored the screw head.On the opening end of the collar, I inserted 2 rare earth magnets, also similar to one of my 2 magnetic styles of collars. I had to pry it away from my wife to take the photos. Unfortunately it is about 21 inches in circumference and a little large for her anyway. At least I know it can be done in this style.Good Luck to you with yours.

After a search on "how to edit a post" I see there is a time limit.So here is a new post with a more detailed photo of the hinge and closure. On the photo with the collar closed, the seam stands out more due to the lamination of the wood but in reality it is sanded flush.http://www.ringofsteel.net/images/wc-detail.jpg
