The researchers "were able to bypass physical and software security in every machine they tested,'' said Secretary of State Debra Bowen, who authorized the "top to bottom review" of every voting system certified by the state.

Really!? I'm shocked, shocked to find the Diebold et al built voting machines that can be penetrated by people with ful access to the source code and tech manuals. It's almost like they intended for someone in power to be able to set the outcome of elections.

I hope Bowen decertifies the lot of them. Maybe it will wake up the rest of the nation and we can get a real election this time.

Yeah.. a couple of my friends at the university are post-grad's there on a government stipend (sp?).  Their post graduate tutition is paid for them, in addition to some 15-20k (I believe) they get per the nine months of the academic year.  And, let me tell you- there's little that they can't hack.

It's my understanding computers gained levels too quickly without sealing off problems at lower levels- or even higher level programmers often understanding the lower level implications of their work.  Plus, apparently, some of these vunerablities may even be upper level problems.  Whatever the issues may be, they're rather common.

No, it's simply that when you contract out for the lowest bidder, you need to make *really sure* your own internal auditing group, well, EXISTS FIRST, then is competent enough to actually *AUDIT* the code purchased from the lowest bidder.

Long story, short: Either every aspect of E-Voting has to be Open Source, Transparent, and Auditable, or we need to stick to paper and pen.

Running this shit on top of Microsoft ( Who never, ever, ever really *understood* networks or security ) ( Remember how BillG totally MISSED the Internet and stuck that dial-up MSN bullshit into 95 even? ) is just the dumbest fucking idea ever.

Remember that old saw about Laws and Sausages? Add Corporate Software Development to it.

Cassandra would have been better off if she was wrong.

No. Software can be and is routinely written to reach very high levels of security assurance. I am quite willing to bet that Diebold's ATM's have a much higher degree of physical and software security assurance. The banking industry would never tolerate a situation where those devices were not certified as secure by one or the other standard. Especially as most large banks are ISO 17799 themselves.

Generally, I'm all for technology, but I hate the voting machines. Give me pencil and paper.

http://gaming.nv.gov/tech_main.htm

The Technology Division examines, tests and recommends gaming devices for approval or denial by the Board and Commission. The Division inspects gaming devices in its laboratory and in the field to ensure continued integrity, and assists in resolving gaming patron disputes through analysis of device electronics and software. The Division is charged with reviewing and approving computerized gaming systems ("Associated Equipment"). Finally, the division is responsible for the Board's internal IT function.

Look at all the forms...

N.B.: Las Vegas' Exit Polls exactly tracked the results of their tightly regulated and controlled voting machines

.....i tend to agree. Pen and paper may not be foolprooof, but we have had generations to figure out how they can be rigged and thus defend against that. Computers are just too new a technology to trust for such sensitive tasks.

It's that instant result cult that forces this issue. If the media and people didn't expect fast food democracy there would be no need for electronic voting and the opportunities for abuse it invites.

In Canada we have laws forbidding publishing poll results until all polls are closed, out of respect for those. This (asshole IMHO) on the east coast keeps challenging the law by putting eastern results on the internet while polls in the west are still voting - freedom of expression yadda yadda. Whether this can effect results is not clear but why test it? And why do we need the results RIGHT EFFing NOW? Simply vote one day and announce the reults the next day. It's not like the old rulers are turffed out the instant the results are announced.

Patience folks. Paper, pencil and patience.

Z.
