Yes it is.. Use a "Nic" that is obviously a nic. Then use your real name and info as the relationship grows.
But to start off a friendship with a lie. ( Your name is Janice but you use "gretchen" for example) is not right. And you should expect more then that from someone yourself.

dasein42 -> RE: Is it a lie to use a fake name? (7/31/2007 9:54:04 AM)

People in a completely other forum have called me Mitdasein, Dasein or just Das for years, and since I met my wife in that forum she often calls me one of the variants of my nickname IRL. Her mother also calls me Das sometimes, and so does my newer slave and her husband.

Not that none of them know my real name. I'm not that secretive about it. I try to use discretion when necessary - I contract so some jobs require greater discretion than others, most ppl at my current work know I'm poly and into kink but only one person really knows the extent of it, and he is also a TPE style master with a live-in collared slave. I have a beautiful picture of my two slaves kissing on my desk at work, in fact.

Scene names are common in the D/s community and reach back to far prior than the rise of the internet. There are many styles of D/s, from the 24/7 style that my family employ to 45 minutes of playtime in public with someone you've just negotiated with, and that only once every couple of months, the rest of life being run perfectly vanilla. And all are equally valid. Many of these people couldn't live the vanilla life they do and enjoy if they couldn't keep a level of discretion that includes not disclosing their real names.

And of course safety is important. If you don't know anything about someone, play online or in semi-public at a play party until both of you feel comfortable with full disclosure. If you're not going to be physically alone with them, I don't see why they have to reveal their names.

IvyMorgan -> RE: Is it a lie to use a fake name? (7/31/2007 1:49:49 PM)

In some ways I have the imagination of a lobotomised tortoise, and so fo a while my s/n was a version of the name on my birth certificate.  But, by using birth certificate for all things official, having a name that NOONE can spell (including ppl copying it from a correctly spelled thing), and shifting to the same nic for most other areas of life, I wind up with a decent division.  And am almost ungooglable.  I tried, I got 8 hits, across 4 spelling variations.

That said, Ivy is not my real name.  There's a reason I'm using it, but that almost more personal than the name I use in the regualr world.  The place I work at call me Ivy, which is a long story.  But, they took it from here.  People who ask, get to know I'm not IvyMorgan.  People who don't, don't.  Simple as.

Is it a lie? According to some dictionary definitions, if the intent is to deceive, a deliberate untruth is a lie... looks like the reason for deception doesn't really figure in to it.

Having said that, it's a lie, so what?

I'll bet that  Rollo Tomasi would approve
