Please send any positive energy to MN that you have available for those killed and missing. Having gone through this once already in SF, I know what folks are going through waiting to hear from loved ones but Michael and I are staying off the cell phones and I would urge others not to call into MN right now as the emergency workers really need all the channels available as they continue to search for survivors.

I had the tv on for a bit.  The pictures said a lot more than the idiot talking heads taking calls.  I'm afraid a lot more people are gone than the one confirmed of the moment.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to try and score political points with it.

Celeste! I just turned to this on the news, 50 cars in the water.
This is unbelievable, I am praying for these people.

Wind's caused bridges to fall before.  Major ones.  (Some more news-savy individuals may recall specific instances that may be cited.)

Destructive resonnance.  It's like with a trampoline.  You jump up and down on the trampoline, a little higher each time, aiming to hit the bottom as the net is just coming up again, also gaining power from kinetic kick-back of the jumper (though this is, normallly, a lesser factor).  Each time, you jump higher.  Until it breaks.

I heard a jack hammer was going on the bridge at time.  I'm not sure how large or powerful this jackhammer was.  Though it's quite possible destructive resonnance contributed to this disaster.  (As far as I know, the cause of this is still unknown.  This is only a possiblity from one who has little information on the event.)

I tuned in around 9:35 PM Eastern time, and the talking heads on Fox were already discussing the possibilities of sabotage... "the right person with the right knowledge of the hairline stress fractures wielding the right tool..."

I'm sorry, but the time for that nonsense is NOT when the emergency crews are still trying to locate trapped victims!

My heart goes out to all those people involved. Unfortunately, it's going to be a long night for everyone in Minnesota.

I think you're talking about one of Tesla's theories.  They actually did a test on Mythbusters a couple months back, and WERE able to feel the vibration in the bridge, after "tuning" the device.  You have to attain precisely the right frequency and it takes time for the effect to build.  I don't know a lot about Tesla.

I do know a lot about jackhammers.  They simply aren't used the way they would need to be to create that effect.  You hit a piece and move on, stopping starting, lots of variation.

Tesla?  Maybe.. I can't help there.  I know that they mention it in a number of my Engineering class, as it's a very real consideration Engineers must consider in several types of construction.

One of the bits about it is that, in order for it to happen, it needs to be in sync, which is a rather difficult coincidence to fulfill.  The theory is, though, that enough potential happenings of this occur often enough that it may happen once in a while.  Engineers are taught to take precautions to reduce the risk (which includes creating systems both resistant to vibritations and to avoid structures prone to regular resonnance).

Previous bridge collapses attributed to this phenomina have had wind build the vibrations instead of something like a jackhammer.  Strong winds, with a wing-like plane of a bridge, make the wind-based version of this far more plausible.

It seems more likely, in this case, that the construction team on the bridge may've made a mistake, or a fault in construction, or an aged piece, or even sabotague (sp?).

i can speak as a former MN, with 2 adult children who still live in the area of the bridge.  The bridge was built in 1967, and never felt the least bit nervous about going in either direction which i did more times than i can think.  My oldest son called a little while ago.  While he works and lives in St. Paul, his wife works in Minneapolis and hadn't gone over the bridge long before it fell (and i thought i was frantic..my son was truly going nuts.)  They've asked people to stay off of their cell phones, and for once i'm glad at least one of my sons paid no attention..lol.  my middle son is still out there some where, although he works and lives in St. Paul.  My son had done a quick survey of his relatives up there and all are safe and accounted for -- a heart felt prayer answered.

Good thoughts and huggles to everyone in MN.

There but for the grace of God...

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and to the brave rescuers (both professional and of the Good Samaritan variety).

Let’s help the wounded and bury the dead before we start looking for heads to roll, and heads will (figuratively speaking, of course) roll – This is to big for someone not to take the blame. We will demand a sacrifice because we have an innate need to try and balance the scales. I just hope that it is not some poor, low level functionary type, offered up to protect a higher up who didn’t close down a bridge he knew should have been.

where's the link to this?

At the time I posted the original OP, I had only seen it on the news and didn't think to even look for a link. I'm sure there will be several in the days to come.

Yes, we have had a great tradgedy happen here today in
Minneapolis.

This bridge is about 5 blocks from my home. I was going
to go down and try to take some photo's, but they had the bridge
directly to the east closed down until the chaos subsided.
They kept any access to that bridge blocked off until nightfall.
They are saying 7 dead, 60 injured and 20 still missing.

Peace and sympathies out to all personally affected by this
tradgedy. And all those whose life will be altered by this event.

Missy.

I suppose I shall get pilloried for this but it appears that a "span" of the bridge gave way. From news reports I heard I thought the whole bridge had collapsed.

See Tacoma Narrows for a spectacular total bridge failure due to resonance effects.

I felt the ground shake as it went down- I was a couple blocks away en route to picking up my friend from work- part of the bridge collapsed into the parking lot across the street from her building, so I saw it firsthand. I'm glad that she, myself, and my Dearest (he works four blocks away) are unharmed- I would have been getting on that bridge 20 minutes later, too. Scary stuff. I saw the flames, heard the screams, was there as the ambulances and firetrucks and squad cars started arriving. Dearest and I are putting together food and water for the rescue workers tomorrow- anything we can do to help.

Sounds like two of the nine found dead so far is the wife of a friend of mine and his very young child. My heart goes out to him right now, and to all affected. This is a catastrophe for the city, for sure.

I still can't get ahold of all my friends, but I'm hoping tomorrow I can hear their voices again. My family is fortunately safe, and I'm glad those in my house are too. I know at least three of them I can't reach who are usually on that road at that time, so I'm pretty concerned, to say the least, but hopefully I can talk to them soon and they are okay and I am just worried for no reason.

Take care, everyone.

My thoughts are with those that know someone that went throught it.

I just don't think about the bridges collapsing. I always felt safe driving over the 35W one. It's just so freaky
