I recently had an open MRI (meaning I wasn't in the long enclosed tube thing) for the lumbar region of my back. It took about half an hour and yes, I had to remove all my piercings (granted I only have my two ears pierced), as well as my bra, hairclips and anything else that might contain metal.

It really isn't anything to be afraid of. You don't feel a thing, I actually fell asleep during the exam! Don't stress about it, everything is going to be just fine!

Aileen...I would second windchimes thoughts on contacting or getting a referral to a neurosurgeon as well. There are some questions you might want to ask before agreeing to surgery and I'll email them to you privately so as not to hijack any further.

disk hernias are caused by?

Ask a doctor and they'll give you a lot of waffle..

Mention bacteria and you get "Humbug!"

like you did a decade ago for ulcers and heart attacks from dental viruses.

See if you have a hyber baric treatment center near you..
Google 'disk hernia' and 'Hyber baric'..

Footballers use it to 'super' heal fractures etc..
its good for fighting low grade infections that don't show up except in low lipids in a  blood test.
How many doctors ask for a blood test for a bad back/neck?
Low grade infections weaken the membranes of disks..
In Oz they found divers using O2 repaired the disk hernias and they disappeared in some cases..
3% of your body uses 30% of the total O2 (nerves in spine and brain.)
This creates an oxygen poor environment..
white blood cells need O2 so stay away..mostly unless theres an infection ..
and then they make your brain swell.. possibly killing you or turning you into a veg.
Bacteria have many forms aggresive O2 demanding and hibernating where they can live in O2 poor conditions.  A low grade infection..
One form of arthritis is now believed to be mainly caused by low grade infections in joints (rheumatoid i think)

I'd leave any operation until the very last resort..
go to a chiroprackor from the Mc Timothy branch..
and ask  him/her to assess your spine and tell you why you have put stress on your neck.. do you have a  'hump'  ..
sleeping without a pillow can help that and get some help with your posture if you do..
Does swimming hurt.?
if not it helps strengthen neck muscles to take more of the strain off the neck.....
don't disregard acupunture either...   it does help with pain

Just my 2 cents

I just saw that commercial for Sunsilk hair products again.....the one where those two hot brunettes try to outdo each other flipping their hair around....and I suddenly thought of Aileen and her herniated neck discs....................[:D]

Prednisone is not all bad (somehow I missed that last time I was in this thread). I have taken it when I get hit with a bad migraine. It definitely has its uses, and from personal experience there have been times when I've felt like it has saved my life. It helps break the cycle of pain and bring your body back to a state of normalcy, that's what I was told. It is a steroid (not like bodybuilders use, exactly), but not in a way that will hurt anybody (unless of course they over do it). If your doctor think it will help you, give it a shot! He/she obviously thinks it will help you better than any other product in his current lexicon. Give it a shot, what could you lose?
