I've always liked purebred labs--Especially black ones.

Other than the fact that these dogs are very good natured and friendly,their genuine love for the water is what draws me to them. If your out swimming in a lake or river, or even the swimming pool, labs are always fun to have around.

My experience probably is not the most useful as the dogs I have primarily dealt with were outdoors only and working breeds. One Olde English Sheepdog and four Great Pyrenees. The Pyrenees need special consideration as they tend to bond strongly, be very wary of those they have not bonded with, are difficult to rebond to someone else, and are rather difficult to train. Not dogs to be taken lightly. One the plus side they tend to be intelligent, loyal, independent (they don't need constant attention), and will mix very well with other pets if raised with them (though it isn't always necessary, depends on the individual temperament). They are guardian dogs, but not attack dogs.

An older BLACK dog in particular. For some reason black dogs really fare poorly and are the least likely to be adopted. It is a myth that adult dogs can't bond as well with their new owners as a puppy can. These adult dogs KNOW where they are, and the bond I have with mine is probably even stronger because of it. I love that FREEDOM dance my dogs did when they left the pound (and all of them did some variation of it). It's a great feeling to know you have a terrific friend and to have saved a life.

Yes, unfortunately I did. The gardner left the gate open and he escaped from the yard. There's a major roadway not far away and he was hit by an SUV. The injuries were too many to truly look at being healed ever. It was a difficult decision but in the end, his suffering was simply to much.

Before I answer the questions about MY dogs or read through the other posts (forgive me if I am being redundant ) Please, go to petfinder.com.

I recommend this site for two reasons.

#1 they have a short test you can take that will assess you and your lifestyle and tell you what breed type is best suited for you. Not for anyone else.

#2 you can go through all of the local shelter listings and see what they have that might suit you, call and see if the dog is still available, find out more about it and set up a time to visit it.

DITTO that! Thousands of dogs out there need good homes, but please find the dog that is suited to your lifestyle. Many of us have heard the story of the woman who returned the dog she'd recently adopted b/c it didn't match the color of her rug!!

Yes, that's a cooky story and I don't know for certain that it is true, but it was told to me by a worker at North Shore Animal League, which is where I adopted my crazy bloodhound mix! What's great about hounds is they are very pack-oriented and very vocal. They are lots of fun to hang out with and they adore people, esp children! They are also very sweet and gentle and sensitive. But watch out- their incredible noses can lead them to all those snack crumbs that fall to the floor!! They do love food!!

Now for what I currently have in my home. You must understand that I have a background in animal behaviour and work with dogs that come to the shelter, usually have been abused and are not ready to be placed. Usually because of unsocial behaviour. My specialty is german shepherds but I have worked with most other large guard, and working dog, breeds such as rotts and the far too popular bull terriers etc.

The above breeds, as a general rule, require a specific type of owner that is willing and able to give them the attention they require to be good pets. They are, as a general rule, usually a stronger, more alpha, personality. They require firm, calm, discipline and very defined boundaries, in addition to alot of physical activity. If they do not get these things, they can become very difficult to manage, even dangerous.

As someone has already stated, most dogs that are surrendered to shelters, especially purebred dogs, are there because someone thought they were cute or cool. They did not consider the breed temperment and requirements and wether or not they were willing and able to provide what the dog needed.

I currently have two german shepherd mixes that were not able to be placed due to their past problems. Everything I adore about german shepherds are the things that make them NOT the dog for everyone. My youngest dog is a coydog...a shepherd, chow, coyote mix. She has been one of the most challenging dogs I have ever had. Anyone that knows the shepherd and chow breed temperments can imagine the challenges. She is sweet, smart, but has alot of the chow independence that has frustrated me so much. In hands that did not understand the two dog breeds temperments and the addition of the coyote, she could have been very snappy and unstable.

Speaking of the coydog reminds me of another of my own personal rants......... from my experience with animals, especially canines, I am completely against all wild animals as pets. Especially the fad of wolves or wolf mixes. There are plenty of perfectly wonderful domestic breeds. I personally think it is irresponsible to try and domesticate a wild animal just for the sake of being "cool".

I have a miniature dachsund. One reason I like him is it amuses me how he likes to stand on his hind legs, and how he 'burrows'(he always sleeps buried underneath a blanket). Because they were bred to hunt gophers and such...

We have a purebred rottweiler...very good watch dog....she'll watch anyone steal anything....

She is wonderful with the kids and doesnt chase the livestock. Unfortunantly most people who meet her automatically assume the entire breed is just like her. I have to remind everyone who meets her that she had already recieved thousands of dollars worth of professional training with the law enforcement and we only got her because they found out about some medical issues and wernt going to spend the 10K to have her surgery. My Sir had already fallen in love with her and well....he's a sucker for a cute face...must be why he's with me.

We also have Rambo, my 7lb chihuahua. Totally non-yappy, housebroken, and calm....has quite a few non-chihuahua characteristics. I woudnt usually suggest them for anyone with kids or other animals. He does however think its his job in life to herd cattle. They just stare at him, but he spends hours every day trying to get them to do what he says.

Cats....we have 9...if anyone wants one please let me know. They are great for keeping rodents out of the cattle feed though.

I currently have a St. Bernard mix, and he is a great beast, in every sense of the word. Loves kittens, and people, unless the people are intruders.

I've had a purebred field spaniel (like a Springer, but all buff), Staffordshires and Basenjis (my folks bred them), and all have been fine dogs.

It is pretty much up to the human to do the work of becoming a decent owner, problems are rarely the animal's fault.

I have my heart set on getting a Bouvier next, hopefully this fall. http://www.bouvier.org/

We have two full blooded beagles. No real reason aside from the fact Doug loves the Peanuts comic strip.
So Charlie and Lucy are their names.

They are small yet not too small. Also cute..so why not?

i adopted a dobbie/german shepard mix from my psycho brother who used to abuse him terribly. He was a biter... hated children and old people. Attacked many people - really should have been put down but when someone tried to break into my ground floor apartment i asked to have the dog. He was a sweetheart to me, i adored him. He growled at everyone but i could literally take a bone from his mouth and he would not flinch - very loyal dog. Only problem was i got pregnant and had to get rid of him. i tried to find him a home, but in all god consciousness had to be honest and tell anyone interested he had a past of attacking people. i ended up having to send him to the pound. i wasn't going to risk injury to my newborn for the dog, though it did break my heart.

Second dog - years later was a sheltie. i had to eventually get rid of him because my then 6 yr old daughter was attacked, mildly 2 times - no broken skin but when i spoke to a trainer he said that as my daughter grew the dog would realize she wasn't last on the totem pole and would not try to dominate her that way. Well i got pregnant again and out went the dog.

i would love to get a pug but i have a 17 yr old cat who would eat her alive lol. So i have to wait it out. It's hard to invest in an animal only to h ave to get rid of them. Next time i wanna make sure it comes into the house and leaves in a box.

And if you do set your mind on any specific breed -and should not be able to find such an animal at your shelter- look up the breed-specific rescue organization in your state/city.

That is how I got my Airedale from Terrier Rescue 6 years ago.

We are owned by two cats and a beagle.
Both cats came from the shelter, and the dog is an retired laboratory test dog. In germany, there is the possibility to adopt an retiring laboratory dog (mostly beagles).
Beagles are even tempered, mild mannered and wonderfull with children. They are as close to a perfect family dog as you can come.

Beagles are used here as test dogs, too. I knew of someone who was contracted to pain "the beagle room" at Roche labratories. He said it was horrifically sad. Kudos to you for taking one of those poor creatures.

When I was little we had a beagle mix. Cute little thing she was :)

I can not speak for all laboratorys, but the one where I did get my dog was "nice". The dogs were not used for dangerous research, "only" new flea repellants were given a final test.The facilities were clean, airy and big. Much place to roam and two run-around-outside times a day.
Most times those laboratory dogs around here are very well socialised and make wonderfull pets.

I have an Akbash Dog (a Livestock Guardian Dog not recognized by AKC)...which some say is just a white Anatolian Shepherd Dog. This is a huge dog, extremely independent (read that; does not play frizbee). I have watched mine keep a bear from entering our meadow...a double-tagged bear (bad bear), no less! What I like about him is that he IS so independent (can you say Domly Dog?), and prefers to be outside. He is very gentle with cats and small children, and quite the gentleman, too; he comes up and stands next to me for half an hour at a time, just for petting while I work at my computer. This is an ancient Mastiff / Sighthound cross...he doesn't drool!!!

What I would do is Google Dog Breeds and read what you can about the dogs that appeal to you. You need to consider:

who YOU are
how big your home and yard are
do you have or are likely to have small children
how active are you
how much time do you plan to spend with the dog
how much money do you have to spend on vet and grooming, if needed?

Some dogs require a LOT of time. Very active dogs, both large and small, can get distrustive if bored. Sometimes it is better to have two dogs to one.

At any rate, there are many many webpages which offer informatino about the temperment of the various breeds. It's a great resource!

Edited to add: After doing all my research and settling on an Akbash...I did more looking around Colorado and online...and rescued one from a Pyr breeder who found him at a local pound in Paeonia. He's an absolutely wonderful dog. A VERY long time ago I started a website about living offgrid; I have a page there (prolly with lots of outdated links by now) on LGDs:

I agree with the many other people here who suggest rescueing a dog; I've never gotten a bad one!

I have a chihauhau/jack russel cross called Lulu

Perfect cos shes as small as chihauahu and as tough as a jack russel and cuter than both...

Really well trained (like all my girls :) ) with a fantastic temperament and very 'dog' and adventurous terrier in nature not very 'handbag' liek for a half chihauhau.

I get a few funny looks walking her but i love her...

Currently I have a dalmatian. He is absolutely adorable, kids always want to pet 'Pongo.' Downside, he's a complete moron. We did adopt him, but the woman who gave him up had gotten him from a breeder. If he wasn't so stupid he could be show dog, but all that inbreeding, well it isn't good for anybody. He's a complete sweetheart though! Wouldn't hurt a fly, probably would lick it to death (as well as any intruder).

I also had a Golden Retriever. Great family dog, loyal and fun for kids.

i have Eddie.. a miniture schnauzer... i am not sure what is so officially great but this lil guy is so so faithful and loving.. He is going to be four and has never been on a leash .. unless at a rest area when on a ride on the car and its required! He is so happy ALL the time and loves people..he will play and chase a ball for anyone all day long! and..he has a cute little habit of welcoming ppl with a little hello pee on their shoe.. cuz he is SO EXCITED to see them! lol oopsie!
