If that's the case, then why wait until the holidays? Why not do it know... or in January... or any other time? Why the holidays?

KMsAngel -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/2/2007 6:46:58 PM)

january! oooh, a birthday present for me! excellent idea. and at christmas time, cause obviously you're not overly enamoured of it, so this will give you pleasant memories to look back on!

sappatoti -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/2/2007 6:59:24 PM)

ocilla -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 6:04:57 AM)

It's all about the cooking and gathering of Friends and family together for social time...
Baking plum cakes late at night while watching old holiday movies has to occur at some point or it does not feel like Christmas.
Oh, I particularly enjoy dog & house sitting during the holidays.  I won't do it unless I like both the dog and the house though.  There is something of a vacation feel or a trying on another's life for a week or two that comes with holiday sitting. I enjoy that folks have decorated - I have very few decorations and it was not something my family got into when I was a child so it is always a bit fascinating to see what people do...very personal and always lovely in individually quirky ways.  And making another's home mine for the holidays is just kind of fun...for the moment I have the place and yet I have none of the longterm worries or property responsibilities.  Sheesh, I never realized how often I do that over the holidays til this very minute.  I'm so odd.

And then there is that break from the day to day caring of my elderly parents who live with me.  I always leave them at home and take the opportunity to get my brothers to step up and help with them while I am away.  Sigh.  My favorite dog moved to Maryland...I miss him.....and his house.

KMsAngel -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 6:32:42 AM)

several years ago, i started taking my kids to the christmas shops i occasionally find. every year we get at least one ornament, and they can spend hours and weeks deciding which they like best. that way, when they step out on their own, like the oldest has now done, they have their own budding set. and they can add to it every year. that way, there is a bit of the old, and a bit of the new.

and THIS year, dang it, i'm putting TINSEL on the tree!!!! i don't care if the youngest doesn't like it, i'm doing it!! purple even! i'm the boss, aren't i????

so there. [:D]

scifi1133 -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 6:43:54 AM)

hmmmm lets see what do i want under my tree?....i think i want an angel all wrapped up in a bow ( and nothing else <weg>)

sappatoti -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 7:46:40 AM)

OK, I get all the reasons everyone has listed here... break from the routine... visiting family and friends... the preparations... but my question is...

Why can't any of that be done throughout the year, at a random time? Why not surprise someone with similar gifts, meals, visitations, during the year, instead of at a time when "it's expected" to be done?

I guess that's my chief problem with the holidays... it's socially expected that people do these things and when someone doesn't, they're automatically labeled as depressed, or a Scrooge, or other such label.

*sigh*

KMsAngel -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 7:51:37 AM)

cause at christmas time, you actually get time off!! that's the nice thing about holidays. you usually don't have to dash back to work the next day.

note on santa's naughty list: angel, bow, scifi

sappatoti -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 8:57:03 AM)

Fine. The "automatic" time off is the key to the holidays.

So, you're telling me that if employers, and schools, and governments didn't "automatically" grant this time off, there'd be no family get togethers, no parties, no holiday cheer?

hmmm...

trappedinamuseum -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 9:19:30 AM)

Hey Angel...

Which list am I on?

Personally, I dislike the holidays.  Everything is so stressful.  I have two sets of parents to see, and one set gets very angry if I spend "too" much time with the other set.  Personally, I'd rather have one Christmas with one family, and then, say, in February, have another Christmas with the other set.  I find I can never enjoy my Christmas because it is always the question of, "who do I need to visit next" or, "If I go see my Dad, will my Mom pitch a fit because I'm not spending time with her"

Plus, according to my mom, I ruin Christmas.  Every  year since I was 11.  Last year, I managed to do it from Colorado.

We put the fun in dysfunctional family holidays.

1 - There is no "apparently" about it: Donna is the bomb. Secret confession: most of the riggers I've seen demos by have a bit of an undeserved arrogance to them which I find unattractive. NB: this is far different than confidence... which She has in spades. I do my own style of rigging which is utterly different from Hers... and She makes ME want to take notes and learn some of Her tricks. THAT, dear ones, is saying something...

2 - I haven't done a kidnapping scene with a guy in almost 5 years. I'm overdue. Sappa, you're also overdue... [;)]

3 - I don't have a 3, the first 2 are pretty good...

baby, come over here. hard for the parents to bitch about spending too much time with the other when you're on the other side of the world!

'sides over here, you can have christmas at the beach, get a sun burn, have a bbq, stay up way late cause it takes forever to get dark, etc etc.

was the best thing i ever did. move to another country before the holidays started!

KMsAngel -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 4:48:20 PM)

No enlightenment necessary Angel, though the thought is appreciated. I read e01n's post very well. ;)

As for trying to confuse me with swapping scents... I'm highly sensitive to most colognes and aftershaves, so chances are if either of you is wearing any, I'll have one hell of a migraine. Anything that happens after that probably wouldn't amount to much fun.

KMsAngel -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 5:35:03 PM)

fun? was it supposed to be fun? [:D]

sappatoti -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 5:47:28 PM)

Yep... as much fun for the kidnapper and kidnappee as Christmas is for you. ;)

trappedinamuseum -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 5:49:07 PM)

Angel, you're so sweet!

If I ever make enough money, I'll take you up on that...:-)

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: 85 days and counting (10/3/2007 5:57:56 PM)
