It may be the same count, but it's certainly a different philosophy. ;)

Isn't it a tad early for a Christmas tree to be up? I mean, who cleans the dust and cobwebs that build up on it all this time while it's waiting to fulfill its one big mission... as an umbrella for the stuff that collects at its base?

Christmas ...bah humbug!

Scrooge was imho correct about the holidays.  it has gone too commercial losing its true meaning with the way retailers start ushering the holiday on November 1st!  it's sickening to hear holiday jingles and songs (played 24/7 since the 1st on this one local radio station) so early this year ...we might as well skip Halloween and Thanksgiving on the calendar.

this holiday is all about what you can get and spend your way to debt now.

ok my rant is over

*steps off soapbox*

well, really, samba, it is what you make of it, isn't it? you have young ums. i never allowed ''santa'' into my house when they were young. they always knew the real reason for the holiday. and lot of presents were handmade, and lots of thought gone into them.

my ex was feral, like you, about the whole bah humbug commercialism of the holidays when we were married. mind you, he also thought i was trying to win points with the family and make them feel guilty when i said, ok, i'll make things. funny thing is, when he left, and had to buy presents for the first time in his adult life - he immediately went commercial!

anyways, point is. if u don't want it commercial, don't go to the shops. can't do much about avoiding the songs, but you don't have to buy into the crassness of the season if you don't chose to. take your kids to a homeless shelter and have them help serve a christmas meal, if you think  you're kids are too immersed in the crassness of the season. invite your friends and a stranger you meet that has no family, to get some of the real meaning of the season in. go back to the actual REASON for the season. it's not gifts, it's not the meal, it's about cherishing the gifts that are emotional, not just material
end of soapbox

hehe, bounty, you're WAY ahead of me! i've only gotten a few things. and for the first christmas ever, i won't have my oldest um with me.  in fact, the youngest um will probably be spending at last part of the day with her b/f and his family out on his parents farm. sigh. can i get one of you to invite me to your place???

personally i don't really celebrate the holiday at all however since i do have UMs i try to keep the spirit of the season for them alone (and no one else).  yes the commercialism does totally suck especially here in the states with the attack of the "gimmes" running amuck from adults to kids. i tend to be Scrooge-like asking my family not to give me presents but for the girls and donate the money to buy mine to charity instead. this year i'm stuck with the family and relatives instead of the usual spending it alone.  don't ask why ...simply holidays and family gatherings are not for me though it will have to change (or not) once i get married.

Wow!

I feel like you have all just kicked over my gingerbread house.

I like the lights.  I like going for the drive to look at the lights.  I like the trees.  I like the decorations.  I like the presents.  I like wrapping the presents up especially pretty so that they are almost decorations in themselves.  I like sending cards.  I like getting cards and reading them and thinking about the people who sent them.  I like the big family brunch and then the big family dinner.  I like the games in between and after.  I like seeing my relatives.  I like seeing people's faces when they open up whatever I have given them.  I like starting to watch christmas movies and shows starting the day after T-Day.  And bringing out the Christmas CD's.  I like the cookie and candy and fudge making.  I like picking out the new ornament to give people for the year.  I like recieving MY new ornaments for the year.  I like decorating the tree and drinking hot cocoa.  I like going to the special christmas events, such as the "Santa Train" with my nieces and nephews.  And there are a lot of other things that I like about it as well.

You all sound like a bunch of Grinches.  Remember HE thought that christmas was all about the presents too, until his heart grew three sizes in one day.

If you do not like your current Christmas traditions, then find some new ones.  Figure out what works.  But do not blame it on "commercialism."  Everything today is commercialized.

Take care and be well.

Best,

Aylee (Going off to reset up and repair her gingerbread house.)

lol

i'm hardly a Grinch, Aylee, i merely choose not to celebrate the holiday. i'm not much into family traditions (or finding new ones) for celebrating anything - it's the way i am.  perhaps i have lost the Christmasy spirit or then again i'm realistic about the holiday as i want to be.  whatever the case may be, each of us celebrate (or not) however we want to.

at least i'm not driving a stake of holly into someone or drowning another in their holiday punch.

Well, that was actually a fast reply, not just meant towards you.  Although, I have had years where I did not celebrate christmas as well.  It has seemed to me that many on here (and I was on CM before under a different UID) spend more time listing reasons why holidays are horrible, rather than looking forward to them.

Yes, shopping is a hassle.  The bell's that the ringers ring drive me nuts.  Traffic is crazy.

But, there is really a lot of great things about holidays.

Ah well.

And I have never staked anyone with holly or drowned them in punch.  Although, now that you mention it, I have this little list.

Take care and be well.

Best,

Aylee

Take care and be well.

Naw, just help me hoist them by their own petard.  I, of course mean the bomb/firecracker sort, and not the small bun with a current in it.

okey doke. meanwhile, here's some skittles for your gingerbread houses path to the door.... and some sprinkles for the tree....you need more drippy royal icing for the icicles and some fizzy lollies for the decorative fence!

*said with sticky fingers and flecks of eaten - they were broken, i SWEAR!- candies and cookies at the corners of mouth*
