What does the subject get out of being tied up with all of those fancy knots and wraps? I can understand the desire to want to help their partner showcase his or her rope tying talents, but is that all there is? What are the other reasons or motivations for being bound in such an intricate fashion?

And yes, I'm serious with this question.

But to answer your real question.. the subjects may just enjoy being bound in odd and painful manners... the fact the person doing the ropework is skilled at it is just a bonus...  at least that's my take on it..
