Bear, that topic is one that's been debated to death for the past 200+ years within our borders. Chances are that as long as the Second Amendment is considered sacred, it's not going to be repealed, hence, it will be used as the basis for every conceivable reason to carry arms. I'm sorry that some would rather turn the topic into pitting one country against another, among other innuendoes I've picked up on.

That's one of the threads I'm trying hard to stay away from.

In reality, I'm doing all I can to keep from sending a full out verbal assault to someone on the other side. It's taking every shred of decency I have to not let this person have it.

Phewww, so I'm not the only one who thought that. I was thinking that this one of those cool, once in a lifetime activities and maybe he was trying to let her know he'd like to try them too. But she shot him down cold.

Agreed. They both could use some conversational skills.

To be fair to person two, though, we don't know the context of this exchange. Is person one prone to dispensing random information about strangers? Does person one tend to use "So-and-so is doing..." as a way of jabbing that life with person two isn't more exciting? Was person two having a bad day? Is person one an extrovert? Is person two an introvert? How typical is this exchange? All those are important questions we can't answer from this snippet.

Had I been person two, of course, I'd have said "Well, that's not nearly as cool as bungee-jumping" and launched into my Kawarau Bridge story.

well, in terms of basic conversational skills, the "one-upmanship" is still preferable to the "your an idiot for even making an attempt at conversation"... imho of course..

I think so too. And I was kinda making fun of myself, because my poor friends all had to hear way too much about that damn jump!

Perhaps because I'm not a gifted conversationalist myself, I really dislike it when folks squelch others' efforts.

Because they're not discussions, they're just public declamations of some person's view point and if you have something different to say, you're wrong and fucked up and they're going to get THEIR knickers in a knot and let the whole damned forum know. Unfortunately, there are some really good people here that have some incredibly intelligent things to say so I try to wade through the BS and garbage to get to their posts. *sigh*
