Ocilla, there's also talk... finally... within the regional, county, and city water authorities to limit the amount of water used for residential irrigation. It's insane to have to keep pumping water onto a turf that is neither drought tolerant nor indigenous to the area just so all the lawns look pretty and lush and green. It's embarrassing to know that while the natural surroundings look every bit like there's a drought going on that within each subdivision, the lawns are very green. And it's insane, but I think I've already mentioned that. One of the proposals all of the authorities seem to agree upon is to get rid of the financial penalties that homeowners now face should they unilaterally decide to turn off the irrigation around their homes and let Nature make the decision as to what species of turf will make up the lawns. My parents' homeowners association has stopped sending out letters to those homeowners who do not irrigate according to the public schedule and whose lawns look thirsty. Instead, they're sending out letters that encourage people to convert those perpetually dry areas of their lawns into beds using native, drought tolerant plants. Even still, there's a faction within that homeowner's association that is determined that everyones front lawns look uniformly green and lush. Knowing about the water shortage, these folks are trying their best to convince everyone to rip up their current turf and install the new generation of artificial turf. They forget, though, that under the turf lies everyones septic tanks, which is a very expensive bill should it all have to be torn away to repair/replace the septic. Sorry. Who would have thought how the lack of precipitation could generate such long-typed posts.
