darkinshadows -> Objectivists Vs. Goreans (7/4/2005 4:19:08 PM)

Question open to everyone who wishes to place their thoughts -

I recently became more aware of the philosophy of Objectivistism (sp?)

Now my question is - that why does it 'seem' to be more acceptable than Gorean - when essentially - they both come from works of fiction books/writers - (although I do understand that Rand was more than fiction)

I am not all that 'up to date ' with the whole philosophy, so these are just observation - not fact.

Peace and Love

Why do people love the Story of O and think fantasies from that are cool but Gor is not?

I'm sure it's something to do with how the sub-culture evolved, and its overall perception.

Objectivists vs. Goreans sounds like one of those roller-rink matches.

I guess I'm rooting for the Goreans.

Hmmm... yeah - I guess I would root for the Goreans - but purely for selfish reasons, of course -

personally i despise them both. "I" have found NO texts of Gor OR so called bdsm that "I" give 10 cents worth to.
i hate em all.
too much mouth and not enough facts. any "book" is written out of someone's opinion. so i have MY opinion. they suck!

but it's just me here. i am always the cynic and the critic.

thanks

The difference is vital. In Gor, whatever a man says, goes. In Objectivism, whatever Ayn Rand says, goes.

Heh, I HATE the Story of O. The beauty books were fun when I was 13, but not so much anymore.

I do like the Marketplace books, but I think that might be b/c I care about the characters as well as the kinky sex.

Ssilver -> RE: Objectivists Vs. Goreans (7/10/2005 9:29:14 PM)

My favorite Ayn Rand joke:

Need advice about your latest megalomaniacal scheme? If only you could ask history's greatest megalomaniac, "novelist" and "philosopher" Ayn Rand. Too bad she's dead. But wait! In 1963, a secret cabal of Objectivists intent on taking over the Student Union at MIT built the first robotic Ayn Rand, and now you can own a Randroid(R) based on their original design. Comes with stock phrases such as "Morality ends where the gun begins," "Pity for the guilty is treason to the innocent," and "Nathaniel! Bring me another gin and tonic!"

Price: US$50,000 includes software*
*software tends to be rather buggy. For instance, your Randroid may oppose immigration, yet be an immigrant herself. She may oppose infidelity, yet cheat on her husband. She may espouse individuality, yet believe that only those who follow her are individuals. She may oppose the control of individuals by organizations, yet laud corporate power. These bugs can not be repaired.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Objectivists Vs. Goreans (7/10/2005 9:29:44 PM)

I dislike the Story of O for two reasons.

First, the chateau stuff isn't very realistic. It makes for an amusing fantasy, but BDSM isn't just for the chateau crowd. And, you know, I have been to chateaux--they don't have crazy BDSM orgies in them at night.

Second, O's psyche is unrealistic and kind of disturbing. Slavery is all about self-abnegation for her. That's not how most real slaves I've known have experienced it. Being a slave is not being nothing. If anything, being a slave is about self-assertion.

onceburned -> RE: Objectivists Vs. Goreans (7/10/2005 11:03:48 PM)

As Ssilver alluded to, Objectivism has plenty of opponents. Probably more of them than of people who espouse that philosophy.

Like Lam, in an Objectivism vs Gorean grudge match I would root for the Goreans.

LICruelty -> RE: Objectivists Vs. Goreans (7/11/2005 4:32:59 PM)

Remember that Story of O was written as a love story from a French literary type to her lover - so there wouldn't necessarily be any realistic intent. He responded, btw, by writing "L'image".

I think you'll find there are detractors of both philosophies. Goreans get short shrift on a regular basis because so many interpret their philosophy as myogenistic. OTOH, plenty of folks think Ayn Rand is close kin to the Anti-Christ for her percieved lack of sympathy for the "common man".
Personally, I think there's a lot of truth in both philosophies. I doubt, however, that either ever get much respect from a significant percentage of the population. IMO, there's not that much interest in philosophy these days. Perhaps I'm getting cynical as I approach 40, but it seems like the majority of folks walk around with no deeper thought than what's for dinner.

you need to read some of anthrosub's posts :)

domtimothy46176 -> RE: Objectivists Vs. Goreans (7/11/2005 6:17:42 PM)

I wasn't saying there is NO interest, just not much among the population at large. As with most any generalization, there are exceptions.

I know , I was trying to be helpful because you seem interested in having philisophical discussions , it is so hard to convey stuff in type.... :)

domtimothy46176 -> RE: Objectivists Vs. Goreans (7/11/2005 7:05:45 PM)

I appreciate it, I do. I have learned, however, that some discussions are better avoided. While I do find Anthrosubs's thread to be interesting, I don't have anything productive to interject and there's been enough knee-jerk reactionism already, I think.
