The other day I saw a couple play with a single tail and it was the highlight of my evening.  I must have one and learn to use it!!!  Does anyone have advice on where and how to shop for one?  I'd like to speak with the maker and be able to see the products (I live in the New York City area), but this is not absolutely necessary if I could get one from a well respected online dealer.  Also, is there any literature on the subject?

It's a long term project to develop the skill needed to play with singletails on live targets. (but OMG it can be so worth the time and effort)
If possible find someone who can spend time with you to go through the basics before you buy one. (Good singletails are pricey)
Expect to pay upwards of $250 for a decent 3ft. (More for longer whips)
There are numerous well respected whip plaiters to get more specific you have to know a bit more about what you want in a whip.
(light whip vs heavy whip), (bullwhip, snake whip, signal whip), Some plaiters make really good signal whips but only decent bullwhipsm etc.

For a very first step I would suggest you read stuff on http://www.bullwhip.org

a few other things to consider is material, usually one type or another of leather. Different leathers break in differently some of the better quality leathers take years to break in, but they will last longer and in the long run you will consider it worth the additional work. Some whipmakers use nylon. If the whip you choose is nylon be certain that it is preshrunk.

Archer gave excellent advice, especially that first line. there are alot of things to consider. force, distance, aim. I practiced with a flogger for probably 2 months logging I would guess 20+ hours on a dummy. I will not buy a cheep singletail, and I cannot afford a good one. So I will bet on years before I will be willing to hit a person.

If you can get a writ of habeas corpus that states that you have no legal recourse, tort, petition, way to go (cant think of the legal term right no) should I just stand up and kill your ass. Cause I don't EVER work that side of the sheets.

But it would be fun for awhile.

LOL

no worries-I'd put ya in my peerless hand and wrist cuffs hahaha

seriously-this guy who talked about the spirituality of the whip at libertine made some sense, after all I had visions of shoes that I later found....why not run into the toy you have been thinking of, or get a windfall that allows you to buy it as a twist of fate?  It really did happen to me

I bought a cheap singletail -- made in Mexico, designed to be abused, worn-out and replaced by actual cattledrivers, not discerning perverts -- and my reasoning was simple: I've been informed that using a whip incorrectly (which is inevitable, for a beginner) greatly increases the wear on it.  So, given that my first singletail will be damaged or even destroyed while I learn, it makes sense for it to be one that I can discard without regret.

Some of the makers will not even speak to you if they know that you are in any way doing BDSM type stuff.
Some makers will have very good input on the subject, weight of whip, length, length of handle etc, for BDSM stuff.
There is a group called Whip enthusist they are a learning group not a BDSM group they have several chapters and you can learn to use a whip thru them.

good point, I had not thought of it that way. that may be a possibility...

You are kidding right? I am sorry to be so bold but you are going to use a crappy whip on a live thing and you are a beginner?
please say no.

I cannot speak for QuiteDom, but if I do purchase a cheap whip, it would only be used for practice on nonliving targets.

I am glad to see people wanting to get into singletails, and also understanding that it's something that it's a skill that takes time and practice to develop. Another issue with a "cheap" singletail is that a well made whip flies prerdictably and with very little effort in my experience, while a "prop whip" as I call them doesn't have the same qualities so learning with one isn't quite the same. The easiest difference to describe is simply cracking one. I'm sure not all of the cheapies are this way, but most I have handled needed to be snapped like a towel to make it crack (hand out and then a real fast hand back move). With my weighted 4' signal whip that move will result in you hitting yourself because the whip follows the hand very well. Conversely, watch the fall as it heads to a target, again a good whip will move in a predictable line of travel and will behave like an extension of the hand.

Single tails are like any other toy...you get what you pay for....sort of....most of the time....occassionally....Here are a few tips on buying a good one.

Test them out. Find an event where whips will be a feature of the educational track and talk to the people in the class and the presenter. Everyone will have their own opinions but you'll quickly find a few universal truths....here are few.

UT#1 Do NOT tell David Morgan you are going to use one of his whips on a person.
UT#2 David Morgan rarely makes a whip himself these days so why pay for his name and an apprentice's skill.
UT#2 Cheap and serviceable beats expensive and crappy anytime. Price is only one indicator of quality. Don't be fooled by it.
UT#3 Kangaroo hide is the BEST material for a high quality leather whip.
UT#4 Nylon is a GREAT material for a first whip
UT#5 Throwing a whip is not rocket science (ok the crack it makes is rocket science but that is another discussion altogether) but it does take some practice and you do have to put in the practice time before you take it "live"

It is possible to get a perfectly serviceable short whip for less than $200. Here a few links to some great whip makers

Peter Jack http://www.thewhipman.co.nz/  check out his short snake whips 8 plait for $150.
Sharron Taylor http://skt.netc.net.au/whips.htm Great work and resonable prices on custom colors. I own 6 of Sharron's whips.
Mike Murphy http://www.murphywhips.com/index.html Current Australian National whip making champion. Fantastic quality.
Coyote Whips http://www.coyotewhips.com/ Excellent nylon whips. Only signal whips are shown on his web page but ask about his 4' bullwhips. These whips are great for beginners and experts alike. I always hav a couple in my bag.

Good luck with your choice and your path.

Domino

No kidding.  In fact, I'm still at the "make it crack reliably" stage of learning.  Actually hitting a target of any kind can wait.   I don't foresee targetting live human flesh for at least a year.  Given how hard it is to find a place to practice with a 6' bullwhip, probably longer.

In "The Loving Dominant," John Warren (buy his book!) says something to the effect that using a singletail on a person is the sign of either a very experienced whipmaster, or a complete fool, and the difference is rarely in doubt for long.

[For anyone who's decided to follow my "cheap sacrifical whip" approach, though, make sure that your cheap whip is the "rancher's tool" type intended for use, and not the "costume accessory" type.]

I saw a demonstration with a whip maybe 20 years ago. A good friend at the time was wielding the whip and the girl he used it on was in ecstasy. He also left his initial "M" on the tail end of a male slave. Both left a lasting impression in my mind. I believe he said his whip was Australian and kangaroo hide.

About 3 years ago I developed a fascination or interest in singletail whips.  They scare me and at the same time I would like to someday be on the receiving end of a bullwhip.  However, I'd not let a person near me with it, unless I saw them use it first.

At any rate, a friend of mine recommended a dvd to me in which technique and usage was taught, along with the proper way to practice (on non-human things like pillows etc).  It was all demonstration and it was very extensive and informative and also provided tips on how to protect yourself from the whip coming back at you while you are a beginner and learning to throw it.  There were also several whipping scenes in the dvd from mild to more severe.   You can find these dvds and instructional videos all over the place.  Do a google search, there are tons of them .

You may be able to find a local VANILLA whip club That meets regularly
to learn and practice whip skills. It wouldn't be a good idea to reveal your
interest in human targets.

Go to munches and express your interest. Same for local parties.

I find Lifestyle Whipmasters are very friendly and enjoy sharing their skills.
Don't ovelook Dominant woman either. I've met some that can wield a wicked whip :)
including one that was blind.

Google on bdsm whips for more info
