First episode was last week... transgender and non-traditional gender roles. Pretty sympathetic, a bit overdramatized, pretty standard fare. i give it a "B-"
Second episode this week... body modification. 1st up was a tribe in Ethiopia where the women endure a ritualized whipping as a show of support for their men. They danced and sang as men (who went from village to village performing this ceremony) slashed them with flexible canes. Deep, bleeding welts, leading to scarring. Pretty wild. They also wore some very interesting metal collars and restrictive metal bands on their limbs.
Second segment of the show was on branding, somewhat superficial and sensationalistic, but not too bad. Last portion was on Yakuza tattoos; more about the cultural significance than the techniques. A- for this one, overall
Next week promises more whipping! w00t!

Show airs Wednesdays at 10pm, btw.

Did they show the Japanese tattoo techniques at all, or only superficially?

Last week the show was off young boys being humiliated by the elders of a tribe in Papua New Guinea. The humilation consisted of having the genitals of the male elders rubbed over the heads of the boys. The in order to be seen a a man, they have to endure a thousand cuts of a razor blade around their nipples and shoulders and backs to look like a crocodile. It was pretty graphic but nonetheless interesting to see the different culture within the world we live in. Next week i believe is some woman that has freezed all the pets that she had that died and is going to stuff and mount them...Im hoping its on her walls..grins.
