I love Chinese food but perfer preparing it myself because for some reason, whenever I get takeout from a Chinese restaurant I get bad cramps, diarrhea and sometimes i throw up....is there something in the food or the way it's handled? Does anyone else have this problem???

Many Chinese restaurants in the US took MSG out of their recipes quite some time ago, due to adverse reactions that included bad headaches.

The current fare can still be pretty salty/oily, which might trigger an irritable stomach in some folks.  Do you drink a lot of water when you dine at various Chinese places?

camille65 -> RE: Wondering Why...? (8/17/2007 8:59:55 AM)

It could easily be a reaction to the MSG that most Chinese (and other) places use. Next time you order out, request that no MSG be used and see if that makes a difference?

Mmmmmmm eggrolls.

Also, alot of Chinese restaurants use different types of oil than you likely use at home.  Canola oil gives alot of people gas, and peanut oil gives some people the runs.  Sometimes they use other more exotic oils instead.

As others have also commented, the first thing I thought of was MSG.  I'd suggest asking the restaurant you use if they use MSG, and if so, request your meal without it or use another restaurant.

Now I want to go to Chinois, the best Chinese restaurant around here...they have the best pot stickers!!!  Mmmm....

The list of signs and symptoms mentioned in various sources for Monosodium glutamate (MSG) adverse reaction includes the 8 symptoms listed below:

I suspect someone would know if it was MSG in large amounts... and if they are sensitive to MSG in small amounts, they should be in distress constantly, because it is in all sorts of non-Chinese commercial food products.

Also that always happens to me when I go to McDs.  I chalked it up to just all the oil and stuff they put in.

Here's an ingredient list for McDonalds:
http://www.home.no/fr34k/Mc%20Donald's%20Recipes.rtf

They put Accent on their McChicken (Accent is msg)

They put Lowry's on their burgers (which contains msg)

They make their fries with beef lard, crisco, sugar and corn syrup

It's no wonder we get belly aches!!

As I understand it, In & Out Burger is the only fast food place that doesn't have sugar/gluten on their fries.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Wondering Why...? (8/17/2007 1:54:23 PM)

Yeah I'm not surprised.  While I still like to go there occasionally, it definitely has cut down on how often I do (that and the whole trying to change my eating habits for life deal).

That's funny you mention In & Out- we watched the Big Lebowski last night and it's featured in one section.

Maybe you have an allergy. Many folks (as mentioned) are allergic to MSG (a common ingredient in that kind of food). I love Ethnic foods, bit found out a few years ago I cannot sotm, ach Indian (Middle Eastern) food due to the Curry (a spice) in most Indian food. It literally makes me ill in about five minutes flat. Sorry to hear about that, though. It doesn't sound like much fun.

Could be some of the ingrediants used in chinese cooking. Almost all restaurants use the same ingrediants and therefore it could be a number of things. When i'm at home cooking chinese i make sure to get all fresh ingrediants, because then i know that what i cook hasn't been sitting around in a kitchen waiting to be served

Aswad -> RE: Wondering Why...? (8/17/2007 4:55:33 PM)

I'd have to go with the oil for the diarrhea.

Gets me every time I eat at a certain mongolian restaurant.

That said, the MSG content may also be too high, and isn't a good idea if you have any mental health issues.

You can ask them to lower the MSG content, but the oil is usually hard to get rid of if they don't have a proper wok.

winterlight -> RE: Wondering Why...? (8/17/2007 5:09:15 PM)

I have IBS and gave up on chinese the last time it made me have diarrhea big time. I adore it. So many foods or things i have had to cross off of my list.

It really sucks big time. I have had them not prepare it with MSG because i get migraines. Now it doesn't matter. no more....

Chinese food also tends to have a lot of salt, which can add to the bloating feeling.

I've switched to Vietnamese - I like the taste and don't find any stomach problems after eating it.
