~shrugs~ My nails aren't that long anymore, so I shouldn't trust my memory, but I've never had that problem, despite attempts to get away. Cup the hand like a duck's bill, but keeping the fingers at a 90 degree angle to the hand, then, and strike with the knife edge of it. Still does the job, although a bit more care is called for in other locations around the body, since the knuckle will deliver a greater portion of the impact. Lately, I've been conditioning my nails to handle being used as claws, but that's not an option beyond a certain length, unless one is willing to end up with very thick nails. It also means that, instead of breaking, they will gouge. So not ideal if one wants to avoid piercing the skin. But with a shorter length, a thumb-poke does wonders as far as pain is concerned. Not trying to be a smartass or anything; just sharing my experiences.
