DiurnalVampire -> Why would this be so difficult?!? (8/19/2007 9:06:42 PM)

I am finally pursuing a hobby that I have always loved.  Photography. I do all my own picture taking, and I want to start taking pictures of other people.
Who'd have thought that it would be sio difficult to find people who wanted to model for me?!?
Bondage scenes, sexy photos... anything. I have done a lot of vanilla work, from kids pictures for their parents to professional looking shots for friends.  Even engagement photos as a gift for a friend since I donthave the money for something big.
I want to get into artistic fetish photography, and Id even be willing to do the naughtier stuff for fun.  I just cant believe there are so few willing volunteer models out here.

Sorry about the rant, but I cant exactly complain to anyone else without getting lots of funny looks.

I'd let you take pics of me, but we're too far apart.

I think maybe the prob is that if they get into somebody else's hands like an assistant. There goes the person job?

Not sure but maybe that is a factor? What if blackmail came into play?

Many people may worry about where the pictures will be seen.  They can get passed around pretty fast online and the wrong person (employer, family member, church member, etc.) may view them.[:o]

The skill of negotiation is to find people who need what you've got in exchange for you getting something that they've got. That's pretty much it. Quid pro quo. Find the right people for the exchange.

Be prepared: Have a portfolio you can take to a coffeehouse negotiation meeting. Present yourself well. Etc.

Be professional: Have a model release form and or a generic contract indicating what freedoms you want to have with the photos.

Try newspaper classifieds, Craigslist, eBay, etc.

Work it.

As others have mentioned, it may simply be that potential subjects don't know how their privacy will be protected. Do you shoot film? If so, who is processing the film and can the processor be entrusted not to keep "extra" prints or "damaged" prints for their own purposes? If you're shooting on digital media, how secure is your computer and network? Is the computer you're using to process digital photos connected to the internet and if so, are you absolutely sure that your security levels are not compromised?

Basically, you'll need to build some trust with people to ensure that they believe you'll handle their photos in a confidential and professional manner. It all takes time.

One place where you may find willing subjects is craigslist. I'm not saying they're the best subjects, but they may be willing. Posting an ad for models there may turn up something.

Hang in there. Sometimes finding that one, right subject will be all the advertising you need to get your dream off the ground.

as a former fetish model, i can tell you that there are 0 women out there willing to pose nude for free. the fetish, and even just nude, modeling world is filled with many many many men who will pay $300/hr just for photography, even if it was just for personal use.
if a woman is willing to pose nude, but wont do it for free, its very unlikely she's worried about her privacy. it's more because she's just not going to waste her time when she could be making a lot more money for it. it's a very risky thing to do, as well. there are a lot of bad guys out there who will take advantage of nude models. has to be worth the risk.

Use yourself as the model.  You're free [:D] and always available when you need to be.  Self portraits are a blast.
Or...try an ad in Craigslist?

I started out trying to get friends to model for me but to no avail. I got the odd girlfriend to do it and from there I went onto strangers. Someone said get a portfollio together and it might be worth putting a small website up. But as someone suggested, be professional. I carry cards around with me and when I see someone I'd like to model for me I offer them a card with all my relevent details. I also explained to them that if they are interested that I would welcome them being chaperoned. I get about one in ten showing interest and about one in twenty actually turning up.

I'm an artist not a photographer so no doubt we would target slightly different people. I target wild and wonderful shapes but I have no problem getting people to take their clothes off.

I know many people who would happily be your lab specimins.

You are searching offline in real society right?  People whom you personally know
from groups or munches?

SimplyMichael -> RE: Why would this be so difficult?!? (8/20/2007 7:55:56 AM)

Here are the things you do.

Use digital and promise to give them the card with the photos so they are in control of them.

Most people, myself included HATE how we look in pictures. Find someone local and "known" and take pictures of them that make them look better than they do in real life.  Learn to do that and you will have people beating down your door.

Look on craigslist for prodoms and offer to do quality pictures, coming from a woman they are likely to be interested because they know you aren't there to get cheap thrills and better pictures mean better money.  Also, offer to take photo "scenes" with their clients for free and I bet some would take you up on that.

Now, when you put up your ad for craigslist, make sure you show before and after pictures, and make sure the before is bad and the after is MUCH better.  You would be amazed at how many put up no pictures or the before pictures are better!

Check out the photo groups on Tribe.  www.tribe.net

There are plenty of models there.

I also post on Craigslist when I need models... Especially great for building my portfolio was offering free shoots to musicians... and some musicians will let you do ANYTHING!

Hug.

I know this guy who did an entire published book on women who posed nude for free and he is working on another,

I have another friend who's entire portfolio for the years 2005 and 2006 consisted of unpaid women some 80 in all and about 60% of the photos were of a fetish nature. It is not as difficult as you think. This site is full of women who would pose for free, so is craigslist.

Sinergy -> RE: Why would this be so difficult?!? (8/22/2007 7:15:06 AM)

Sheesh.

I would be more than happy to be a photo model.

I generally dislike how I look in pictures, but if somebody wants to take pictures of me I would consider it an honor.

Somebody tries to blackmail me I can say:

1)  It was a job.

2)  My friend asked me to help him/her out for an art project.

3) I would say "You do know the difference between the practice of BDSM and being a model."

Or any number of other things.  I am pretty resistant to blackmail regardless.  While I am a private
person, I follow the general guideline in life that if I dont want other people to find out about a certain
behavior or mine, the correct thing to for me to do is not engage in that behavior.

I would want copies, but I am not sure I would demand control over an artist's work.

I always get a kick out of the use of the word "practice". like a Doctor saying he's been practicing medicine for several years...I always want to say, "I'll come back when you're done practicing and finally get it right"

LOL
