I wonder what everone's take is on the differences between the 2 .. For me I believe that SLAVE's have submitted to have NO CHOICE .. where as SUB's are always within their rights to CHOOSE .. so .. what do you think????

LA will come along sometime today with about a billion links to all of the times this has been discussed.  What it boils down to is there is no definitive answer.  It is unique to the individuals involved in a relationship and what words they choose to describe their roles.

A slave voluntarily gives up all choices but one: to leave*.

A submissive has more choices than a slave (how many and of what nature depends upon the relationship).

* Some slaves claim they've given up that right as well. However, a quick call to the local constabulary would ensure all her human rights and freedoms are restored promptly. Regardless of whether that call is ever made, the option exists to end a relationship for whatever reason the slave feels to be compelling.

Slaves always have choices, and hopefully enough brain power and self-esteem to exercise them.

....what I think is>  that this is one of those topics that re-re-re-repeats itself and will continue to be the age'ol question...and debate.

yanno..

one person says >  I am blue and you are green....and blue is a deeper color on the wheel ...and then green says noooo green comes first and so that is the most ideal.
and then someone else says...I don't even believe in colorwheels,  and blue and green make aqua and that is ideal. Then someone hollars intolerance!! and "color envy or ignorance!"  and then the cream pies start flying.....

for me..
what it comes back down to at the end of "this debate I no longer engage in" is>>  What I identify with are the feelings between he and I ..and what he chooses to call me.

heck!  it's saturday...I'd really just rather dance than debate!
celebrate...celebrate....dance to the musicccccc....
( ok..I just threw that in there..because I've been dyin to use that icon LOL  think its sooo cute...)

I call myself a submissive.
But I finally realised that I'm whatever he wants me to be.
I am simply his.

(and in FOUR DAYS me and my hairy non-epilated legs will be with him yay yay yay yay yay)

To a large degree, I believe the words may be used interchangeably.  Where a distinction is applied, it is, as Bobkgin states, that the slave has given up all rights to choose but the right to leave (that right being the one right she cannot give up as a matter of law).

From what I have observed, people use the term they believe best suits their particular situation and relationship dynamics.  Like Humpty Dumpty in "Through The Looking Glass," the words mean what we each choose them to mean.

In the sense of obedience/disobedience, true.

I notice you did not define "submissive", nor distinguish it from the term "slave".

It is true some use these terms interchangeably.

Some do not (thus the distinctions I provided).

Wouldn't it be a possibility to post the threads here that are being asked again n again n again and make it stick with the most FAQs like...pro dommes - subs vs slaves - why don't you find anybody real etc.? I mean..there aren't so many threads that are brought up again and again and again so it wouldn't take much space ( I don't think)

Everyone has their own definitions of the words...

To me a submissive person does choose... and can function independently in many ways.  Where a slave is someone who needs to have someone else provide an answer to every question... basically someone who needs to be micromanaged... needs to be told when to sleep... eat... dress... work... etc... they don't feel right with themselves unless they have this... and if they can function independently they will, but it feels unnatural to them and they are not happy doing it.

Obviously I do not feel that the two words are ever interchangable.

As I've said every other time this comes up, it's about defining things yourself.

Submissive is a personality trait (adjective) or a chosen relationship position (noun.)  My submissive might not actually be submissive.  I know Dominants who are not dominant.

A slave is a type of submissive.  I think the distinction is that submissives tend to need the right to say 'no' in their relationships; veto power if you will.  A slave wants that power taken from them.  This illustrates a Total Power Exchange relationship (or APE or APT or whatever, it's all the same concept.)  Not all submisives are slaves, but almost all slaves are submissive.

I think this is the most important thing of all. Sometimes my Master calls me his sub, sometimes his slave. The only thing that matters is that we know what we mean by it.

Mistress A-
The first person answered your question, and you can see from the other responses why it is moot point to have a opinion.  It only matters to have an opinion, if at all, in regards to your own personal relationships.

I do not believe there are any distinction between the two labels but only because I cannot demand everyone follow my definition of each.  Show me a slave who claims she has no limits, and I will show you a person who is alone or has found a very compatible person with the same limits or value system.  I do believe that people can be more giving and selfless in the giving of themselves than others and are naturally incline to be more subservient.  However, these people may not necessarilly identify with either the term submissive or slave at all  ........Again, it pretty much is a moot point to have an opinion until there is a universal belief system.  I say it is soley a word game and choice of the Dominant(s) and the submissive(s) in the relationship.

It wasn't always so.

Sub was someone who submitted part-time, where a slave submitted 24/7.

Just ask the Goreans

But language is a slippery thing, constantly evolving.

Personally I think it would be a shame to lose the distinction, but then I may be too late for that.

Whats the difference? Whatever you want it to be. If you feel you are a slave, then call yourself a slave. If you feel you are a submisive, then call yourself a submissive. As long as you are pleased with your label, the rest of the world doesnt really matter. (Well...except for your top half, but Im gonna assume that you and the top half agree otherwide you wouldnt be together...)

When I go to any of the large conventions or fetish events, Im constantly approached by people who ask "what are you?"...really...those exact words, I dont flag so sometimes people feel the need to be curious. I usually answer, "Im a girl, what do I look like?"....

I hate labels

ghita~

Sorry, Bob - I wasn't replying directly to you. Was using fast reply in response to the OP. It picks up the name of the person directly in front of the reply, and you were standing in line in front of me so it used your name in reply to.

I've been a sub, I've been a slave. The types of men I choose are similar in intellect and style, so the terminology means very little to me. I don't care what he calls me. I'll be whatever kind of s-type fits with his definition.
