When I don't take my Effexor XR (150mg once a day) I get HORRIBLE headaches..[:(]

No, it is not. I took Effexor XR for many months without headaches!

As a nurse and also someone who has taken Effexor, the headache is not uncommon.  When a dose is missed, your serotonin level changes.  I know when I would miss taking my Effexor I would have some of the effects I am listing here.  Remember everyone is individual when it comes to medications and how their body reacts.

Here are the effects listed  that missing or stopping your Effexor can cause.  Hope this helps.

When people suddenly stop using EFFEXOR XR, they can get symptoms from stopping the medicine too fast. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Dry mouth
  • Fasciculation (muscle twitching)
  • Headaches
  • Hypomania
  • Impaired coordination
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • Nightmares
  • Seizures
  • Sensory disturbances (including electric shock sensations)
  • Somnolence (sleepiness)
  • Sweating
  • Tinnitus
  • Tiredness
  • Tremor
  • Unpleasant mood
  • Vomiting

I get dizzy, nauseous, and trembly when I miss mine. It does have an affect. My doc told me to take it as soon as I realize I've missed it, rather than just wait for the next dose.

I get a real goofy, lightheaded feeling.  LOL...lighthearted gets lightheaded [:D]

I also have the worst dreams when I've missed a dose.  oh well, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

Yes, changes in serum SSRI levels to either direction (ramping up or down) can elicit painful headaches and other side effects, most of which are already labeled SE's on most SSRIs for regular dosing.

Been there...done that.  It's called withdrawl syndrome and with Effexor, it can be very nasty.  Effexor is a good medicaton, but if you want to stop taking it, always consult with your doctor first so he/she can wean you off slowly so as to avoid that.  In the meantime, make sure to get your refills on time and take it every day as directed [;)].  Babygirl005 offers some excellent information and advice.

Yup, I've been on 3 different meds, and they all gave me headaches when I missed, increased or decreased. I should buy stock in advil.

Not uncommon, and not a problem unless accompanied by a rise in BP.

Just be glad you haven't gotten the "brain zaps" yet. [:D]

The joys of Efexor ...

the beauty of antidepressants[&:]

Aswad -> RE: Is This Common? (8/26/2007 2:15:56 PM)

Well, some of them.

I'm kind of sad about breaking up with Parnate, in a way.

Apart from the pharmacy f*ups, some BP circus, and having to take it 4 times a day, it was love at first night.

But for low incidence of undesireable side-effects and limited hassle (for me, having a doc that lets me handle the interactions), Emsam seems to be the king/queen, with its once-a-day patch, tendency toward weight loss and libido increase, and slightly stimulating properties. At least for those who are passivized by their depressions and could do with the extra focus and energy.

It's not catching on, though, due to the interactions (some docs don't like knowing about interactions).

The beauty of antidepressants is like love; it's only revealed when you're mated to the right one.

The rest of the time, it's just meh, though better than nothing as long as it lasts...

Yup... granted, i'm at 300mg, but the one time i missed it, a headache was the least of my problems... it was like one of the worst days i'd had before going on the medication- i was suicidal, physically shaking, and terrified of being around or having to talk to other people. i hate to think of what will happen if i lose my job and can't get it anymore!! Effexor is renowned for needing a long tapering off. Missing a dose of it can cause various unpleasant side effects. Can you figure out a way to take it without forgetting?

I was on Zoloft and it was recommended that I take it at night in case there were stomach pains I would sleep through them. I finally gave up and had to take it in the morning because no matter what I did, I couldn't consistently take it at bedtime. Luckily I didn't have the upset stomach side effect that some people get.

Never decide to abruptly stop taking it. I'm told that way, hell lies.

A suggestion for those who have trouble remembering to take their meds? I take Effexor XR and a contraceptive pill, and at 7pm every night (a time that suits me) an alarm on my mobile/cell phone goes off. This basically means I very rarely miss them, and has actually resulted in about 3 girlfriends also taking their contraceptives at the same time.

Aswad – That Emsam sounds interesting.. I might file the name away, though at the moment there’s no way I want to mess with the delicate balance I’ve finally managed to achieve!

I do also have quite severe effects from missing the Effexor.. like the worst day ever, which comes on within a matter of minutes (though I do suffer from those kinds of mood swings atypically).

I remember way back my dr talking to me about side effects from anti-depressants and him saying ‘strangely, a lot of the side effects are the same as the symptoms of the problem were trying to treat’ and if you read the side effects of many they read like a list of depressive/anxiety symptoms anyway.

Edited for spelling [:)]
