wednesday -> Edge Play and Research (7/9/2005 9:30:30 AM)

So in a conversation with an EMT friend yesterday, he told me that he had no less than 4 people in his ambulance this week who had self-induced heart attacks (and TENS pads stuck all over their chests).

This got me wondering... how much research do you do before engaging in any sort of edge play or risky behavior? I mean... one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind was "Huh... I wonder how many people still put butter on burns." I'm curious if people just go by word of mouth, their own idea of common sense, what their mothers taught them, what they read in books... where do you get your information?

My husband and I haven't really engaged in anything risky or edgy but he's a paramedic and I'm an EMT and health & safety educator, so we both already have the background and knowledge needed to know where we're likely to need to take precautions. Something as simple as checking the circulation in fingers and toes before, during and after a bondage session comes naturally.

If and when we do move on to edgier play, we would do extensive research. It's just in my nature to want to be completely prepared for almost anything that might crop up, just in case. That research is usually a combination of everything you listed -- I'll read, and ask those with experience (my mother was a paramedic as well, and a psychologist, so she's a valuable resource [;)] ), and cross-reference everything before picking and choosing what makes the most sense to me. Afterwards what doesn't work is discarded and what does is kept, and elaborated on later.

Accidents are almost entirely preventable, so being as prepared as we possibly can be for both good and bad is a necessity, even outside the realm of BDSM.

A brief medical and fears history is what I make a note of before taking someone to the edge and dangle them over it.

Well, with regard to 'self-induced heart attacks' caused by tens units, that would be one of those examples of you shouldn't believe everything you hear.

While it is certainly possible with any electricity across the chest wall to induce dysrythmias (heart rhythms that are not normal and can be dangerous or deadly) they can't induce a heart attack. A heart attack is the death of heart muscle due to decreased blood flow – most often caused by plaque in the vessel walls of the arteries supplying the heart. You ain't getting that with a tens unit.... unless it was some kind of sexual thing, and the person got a heart attack induced by doing the nasty. ;)

Moreover, if your acquaintance was referring to malignant dysrythmias (the thing you worry about causing with current across the chest – asystole and Vfib) the patients would not have been talking to him.

That said, it is actually a little challenging to do something that bad to yourself. You have to hit the heart with exactly the right kind of current at exactly the time in the cardiac cycle where the heart muscle is vulnerable. I have had current passed through my chest several times, mostly due to either carelessness or basic stupidity, and have been none the worse for wear.

But then you can get this without current either – just a strong whack to the chest at the perfect time can cause it. Its called commotio cordis, and its a rare cause of death in athletes – like the kid who gets hit with a baseball and falls to the ground dead.

Now that is not to say that I think applying a tens unit to your chest is a spiffy idea. It isn't. However I also don't think its a good idea to drive in a car without a seatbelt, ride a bike without a helmet, or not get your kid immunized. And I am surprised how many people do those things. So to answer your basic question... common sense is anything but.

Nick

ooo I probably misspoke, thank you for catching that.

I didn't mean to imply he spoke to his patients/passengers. In one case, the woman who had been "in the act" with the gentleman told them what was going on as they loaded him into the ambulance... the others I'm assuming he drew his own conclusions on. Probably unwise for me to go by his conclusions. [;)]

And I should have chosen my words more carefully. It's much easier to say "heart attack" than "malignant dysrhythmias" and that's just... laziness. I know full well it's not the same thing, but I just didn't use the right words. Eh, I switched out of pre-med after a year... bad habits develop, I guess [;)]

But since you're better educated, I have a question. If someone has an existing heart condition (say, possible mitral valve prolapse, and had a PDA closure), how dangerous is it to play with a violet wand? I get mixed answers on that.

Now i am wondering, how dangerous is it to use a Tens unit attached to both nips with large breasts? I've done this for some time now but sure don't want a problem.[:o]

lost1377 -> RE: Edge Play and Research (7/30/2005 12:24:06 AM)

They make special bi-polar attachments for nipples to prevent current from going through the chest. Still, if one side loses contact... Well, better safe than dead during kinky sex.

MstrHellsFury -> RE: Edge Play and Research (8/1/2005 3:19:37 PM)

ahh the risk factor...getting to the edge and beyond...for me..I've attended many a session..most with the ability to get some hands on experience...and I read to the point of author blindness...seriously...I get as much knowledge as I can before attempting something on my own...I may be a risk taker..but I won't risk anyones life to achieve a moment of simple pleasure for myself or them...like the beer ad says..know when to say when...courage is a beautiful thing if you have the courage to know your own limitations

If you can get proudsub interested in this thread, there was a great thing about amperages and voltages and what would hurt and what not........and I am not to sure that sfgrrl didn't post it.....how bout it stef, was it you? I know you posted considerably on that thread........(if my mind is not going which it prolly is)
