Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo- Rick Derenger...

e01n -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 8:28:14 AM)

Big Black - "The Model" (from Songs about Fucking)

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 8:29:28 AM)

I wish they would crack down on songs with lewd lyrics...UMs may be listening

e01n -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 8:31:02 AM)

The song in question has no lyrics at all - just this really great heavy hard groove. Kinda like getting fisted with a washing machine on spin cycle....

Lemme see: a song for michaelofGeorgia... Leonard Cohen "The Partisan"

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 8:33:22 AM)

quote:

Leonard Cohen "The Partisan"

Tarisa -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 8:33:30 AM)

The greatest living Canadian songwriter - and you've never heard of him? Sir, I am shocked - SHOCKED! to hear this...

quote:

Recurring themes in Cohen's work include love and sex, religion, psychological depression, and music itself. He seems to be seeking wholeness. He has also engaged with certain political themes, though sometimes ambiguously so. Love and sexuality are common themes in popular music, yet Cohen's background as a novelist and poet enabled him to bring a darker, deeper edge to these themes. "Suzanne" mixes a wistful type of love song with a religious meditation, themes that are also mixed in "Joan of Arc." "Famous Blue Raincoat" is from the point of view of a man whose marriage has been broken (in exactly what degree is ambiguous in the song) by his wife's infidelity with his close friend, and is written in the form of a letter to that friend, to whom he writes, "I guess that I miss you/ I guess I forgive you … Know your enemy is sleeping/ And his woman is free", while "Everybody Knows" deals in part with the harsh reality of AIDS: "… the naked man and woman/ Are just a shining artifact of the past."

The song itself has a Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Partisan
quote:

"The Partisan" ("La Complainte du Partisan") is a song about the French Resistance in World War II. The song was written in 1943 in London by Anna Marly and Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie. It has been adapted (with English lyrics by Hy Zaret) and covered by diverse artists, including Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, 16 Horsepower, Red Union, Po' Girl, Branimir Štulić and Electrelane.

quote:

THE PARTISAN

When they poured across the border
I was cautioned to surrender
This I could not do
I took my gun and vanished.

I have changed my name so often
I've lost my wife and children
But I have many friends
And some of them are with me

An old woman gave us shelter
Kept us hidden in the garret
Then the soldiers came
She died without a whisper.

There were three of us this morning
I'm the only one this evening
But I must go on
The frontiers are my prison.

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing
Through the graves the wind is blowing
Freedom soon will come
Then we'll come from the shadows.

Les Allemands étaient chez moi
Ils me dirent "résigne toi"
Mais je n'ai pas pu
J'ai repris mon arme.

J'ai changé cent fois de nom
J'ai perdu femme et enfants
Mais j'ai tant d'amis
J'ai la France entiere.

Un vieil homme dans un grenier
Pour la nuit nous a cachés
Les Allemands l'ont pris
Il est mort sans surprise.

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing
Through the graves the wind is blowing
Freedom soon will come
Then we'll come from the shadows.

As you can see, a pretty damn good song... and hardly redneck. Take it as the compliment it was intended as...

e01n -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 9:01:45 AM)

Oh, and Tarisa still reminds me of Big Black covering "The Model"

And the name of that NIN song is "closer"

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 9:16:04 AM)

I don't live in Canada and I don't know much about folk music...don't want to either.

e01n -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:18:20 AM)

<sigh>

Anyway, I'm sorry that you don't appreciate the compliment of someone saying that you remind them of a great song. Your loss.

Lemme see... I think I'm short one for Bear... it also sounds weird, but I read his posts (where he's not giving himself corner time or munching popcorn with YT) and think of Coltrane's "A Love Supreme"

cuffnspankme -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:23:23 AM)

You are knowledgeable on so many things e01n and you try to be nice about such things. IMO that makes you a great man on that level. Not sure yet about other levels.

My song for you is If I could Be Like...That 3 Doors Down

kayne -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:29:09 AM)

Paradise City // Guns 'n Roses

e01n -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:38:43 AM)

Strangely, I don't think I've ever heard 3 Doors Down... unless they're who I think they are. Then I didn't like them [;)]

Kayne still brings Alphaville to mind, so I'll say Laura Branigan's version of "Forever Young"

kayne -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:40:13 AM)

Alphaville?

The Hero of Canton // The Mudders

e01n -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:43:13 AM)

Alphaville - great 80s band. Definitely worth looking up.

And I *liked* Firefly.. danke schoen.

NY Dolls - "Personality Crisis" - it's that "cute straight boy" thing...

kayne -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:49:51 AM)

I'm afraid I am German deficient. But I love Firefly as well. "Jaayyyyyyne! The man they call Jayyyyyyne!"

What crisis? I just like both.

1812 Overture // Tchaikovsky

e01n -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 11:56:51 AM)

danke = thank you
danke schoen = thank you much
bitte schoen = you're welcome
bitte = please

"Ein bier, bitte." "Funf Euro, danke." Danke schoen." "Bitte schoen."
"A beer, please." "Five bucks, thanks." "Thank you (much)." "You're welcome."

There - all the German you'll ever need... [;)]

I'm out for you, mate. Sorry. I'd look for Johnny Thunders while you're out looking up Alphaville...

spiral23 -> RE: What Song Reminds You Of TPAM (8/30/2007 1:53:25 PM)
