I really like that design.  The holes offer all kinds of interesting options for restraint, immobilization and accessorizing.

One thing I've always wondered about the folk who make these kinds of collars, have you ever considered using a socket set screw instead of a button head hex screw in these?  It would make for a much cleaner looking design if the screw hole didn't conpletely transverse the collar and the set screw were hidden on the underside of the collar.

Thank you krikket.
stef,
Thank you also and as far as you question. There are a couple of factors here. One is that the material available in a blind hole would leave very little for threads and would make stripping very likely. Two is that customers have commented that they like that I use a screw that is large enought to handle easily.
Three is that I also make other designs and one of those is a magnetic closing that has no screws at all.
Hope this helps answer your question. I appreciate all feedback in helping me make a better product.

I suppose that depends on the kind of joint used.  I can't get a very clear idea from your photos if it's a half lap joint, some variation of that or something else entirely.  With 3/8" bar stock and a half lap joint, you could drill and tap through the 'top' half of the lap and 1/4" into the 'bottom' and have plenty of threads in the 'bottom' for a 1/4"-28 screw to securely engage.  With the stainless, unless you were seriously torquing down the screw, it would be unlikely that threads would strip.  I would be more worried about the allen wrench rounding off

stef,
Just got home. Damn battery went out on the bike but luckily I got a jumb and made it home.
Anyway back to the collar. I use 3/8 stock and a half lap like you said. But that leaves 3/16 on each half. If I leave 1/16 before breaking thru, I have 1/8 inch on bottom. That does not leave much room for tapping, especially if using a tap with a lead on it.
I do see your point in a smooth look.

I changed the hole configuration so the pattern isn't broken up by the screw and hinge.http://ringofsteel.net/images/vl-d.jpg

The collar is very pretty. My concern would be, that in wearing it 24/7, stuff would get into the holes - soap, lotions, cosmetics, etc. (yuck), and hair could get tangled in it and pulled out (ouch). If you are wanting a lighter weight collar, might I suggest using hollow stock? I don't know if that is available, or feasible to work with - just a sugestion. Master is a leather worker, so has always given me leather collars.
My compliments on your outstanding feedback. Your customers all sound extremely pleased with your products and your service.

Thanks and yes that is a possibility and valid concern. My wife wears hers with a magnetic closing so it comes off very easily to give someone a close up hands on view.
For 24/7 wear it would be harder to keep clean than one without holes I'm sure.

Like Boss said to Charley in "Open Range" I prefer a gun with some heft"
I make "jewelry" with some heft and this design is more a visual than a weight issue.
In fact I'm getting requests for 1/2 diameter items now.
I do appreciate all feedback and consider it all... some more than others.
