I was reading another thread about Hepatitis C and saw a list of who is at risk and should be tested. One of the at risk behaviors stated in the list was promiscious sex. I knew Hepatitis B (which is curable) could be spread through sex, but I thought Hepatitis C (deadly and uncurable) was only spread through direct contact with blood. If an infected woman gives it to a man by having unprotected sex with him during her period, I could understand because that would be direct contact with blood. But can it be spread without blood? I am now very concerned. A good friend of mine also heard Hepatitic C was only spread through direct contact with blood. She ended up having unprotected sex with a man who has it. If Hepatitis C can be spread without direct contact with blood, I need to know right away so I can tell my friend not to have sex with anyone else....that her sex life is basically over.

NIH (National Institute of Health) says you can get it from blood or body fluids.

Medline says you can get it from blood or having sex with an infected person.

CDC (Center for Disease Control) says you get it from blood and says nothing about sex or other bodily fluids.

Those were the first three sites I checked when I Googled it. There's a lot of information out there if you want to spend the time researching it.

Your friend should talk to her doctor asap.

Per info on CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepatitis/c/fact.htm

HCV can be spread by sex, but this is rare. If you are having sex with more than one steady sex partner, use latex condoms* correctly and every time to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. You should also get vaccinated against hepatitis B.

Although sexual transmission has occurred, presently there is little reported evidence that chronically infected persons infect long-term sex partners in mutually monogamous relationships. Current information suggests there is no need in changing current sexual practices for a person with a steady sexual partner. Persons with HCV infection who have multiple sexual partners should reduce their number of sexual partners and inform prospective sexual partners so that appropriate precautions (latex condoms) can be used.

Approximately 5 percent of HCV-positive women transmit their infection to their infants (this rate is higher if the mother is also infected with HIV). HCV-positive mothers can breastfeed their babies as long as their nipples are not cracked or bleeding.

supposedly it is possible but very very rare, be cautious though of small cuts, rips, tears etc on the penis, vagina, rectum, mouth etc...it only takes a minute amount of blood to pass on...dont share razors or tooth brushes etc for the same reason minute amounts can pass the virus... as long as your sensible and stay aware of blood, ..

and Hep C is curable for most people...

I had Hep C...it is not normally curable i was lucky the treatment cured me...i never gave it to my husband and we did have sex during the time i was infected

It can take 10-20 years for the symptoms to show up. Many people walk around having it and don't have a clue.

strictly by blood. my bro had it took interferon injections for it he was in remission but he had complications with diabetes and a motorcycle wreck that he got the infected blood from he lived 25 years after diagnosis
