1.   learn his moods and ways. a good slave would rather die then disappoint her master.  Learn the rules and boundaries confess your mistakes and sins the punishments and atonements will strengthen your relationship 
2.   your appearance and behavior reflects most of all you love for your master
3.   remember master has accepted your entire care and wellbeing as his responsibility.  he wants to know what is troubling you.  when you need downtime 
4.   you are nothing without your service so always strive for perfection  
5.   protocol and rituals will make you happy and content learn them

For me and only me (not us as her list is different from mine I'm sure. Poor slave having to serve 2 masters)...

1. Little things matter, no matter how small
2. NO PICKLES EVER!!!
3. White socks are to always be worn when cleaning
4. I hate capri pants and will make you remove them regardless of location.
5. The manner in which you serve me reflects on me... Act accordingly

All the other things she shouldn't need training for. As good as I am (and I am VERY good) I can't train trust, nor would I try.

Having through this thread and then talking about it with Valyraen, we find that we really don't hold with most of the ideas here. If I were nothing without him, then I would be one-dimensional and he find me boring. Here is the list of five things that he thinks an ideal slave would be trained in...

1. Self-defense - so that he doesn't have to worry about her when he isn't around.
2. Swordsmanship - because girls with swords, who actually know how to use them, are really fucking hot and gives her an appreciation of the swords that he collects.
3. A martial art (different than self-defense) - because of the self-confidence, self-reliance, discipline and humility it teaches. Also, better to have a girl who can fight beside him.
4. Witty banter - Otherwise he gets really bored.
5. How to make his hot chocolate correctly - Fuck all other protocols, this is one he gets up in arms about. He really does.

~fast reply~ For me and my life personally top 5 is:
1. the slave is not a dog so let's learn and teach together.
2. be comfortable with a Master who is in the entertainment industry
3. be adventurous.
4. understand I'll make mistakes so look at me as a human first
5. surrender baby, surrender!

1. Close your mouth and listen if you want to know what I like, Look, too. Learn to read me and study me as intently as I study you.
You will find that I like rare steak and I love order but hate the details and lists.
2. It's not all about you. Maybe I'm just mad, or busy, or tired. If it's about you I will tell you.
3. Open your mouth and tell me when it IS about me. That stuff cycling through your brain that's pissing you off? Yeah, that's mine too.

1: Trust - you would be surprised at how hard trust can be. A slave should trust their Master and Owner. "...In prefect love and in perfect trust..." 
2: Kneel - i feel a slave's place is kneeling at my feet, so that I can pat her head and tell her whar great job she has done or so that I can look down at her and lecture her on what need to be corrected.
3: Fetch - if I want a specific toy, or something to drink or the tv remote, I expect my slave to move quickly to fetch it for me.
4: Show Respect - I insist that my slave be honest with me in all things, communication is important, honest communication is vital, but there is a manner and tone that things should be done. A kind tone, maybe a soft tone or low tone, with a "Sir!" or a "Master!" thrown in. There is no place or time to ber uppidy accept in Play.
5: Cook - I am not a great cook, though I do cook, there are always times when I do not want to eat out or cook, myself, my slave should not only know how to cook but what I like.

just wanted to say how happy i was to read your posts,  when i am surrounded by profiles of selfish pigs out for themselves its easy to think sometimes "is it me or am i the only one who  wants to improve and enrich" nice to see how many people put some version of "be the best you can be" as a goal for thier slave/sub.

I wouldn't waste my time on a girl who needed self-respect, that kind of thing is (afaik) impossible to teach ...certainly by the time they're legal age it's too late. So.

0. Try to manipulate me the wrong way and I will punish you. Ask me nicely and I will (probably) reward you.
1. Nerdy business admin stuff. I'm a high-tech entrepreneur. If I had a good assistant I could do 5x the work at half the stress. It would be enough for both of us to live on very comfortably. Working from home means play time never has to end, it just has to be quiet when on the phone to a client.
2. All the particulars of my anal retentive behavior around the house. For example, don't move my stuff without authorization or I'll lose it and blame you. Also, put it back where you found it. If you open it, close it. If it breaks, fix it. If you take it out, put it back. If you make me feel embarrassed about my terrible short term memory I will show you how much fun that is by losing count while I'm caning you.
3. In public: Don't make me late. Work together with me so we both dress well. Improvise.
4. Make a list of your limits. Note which ones are flexible. Also make a list of your experience level. A year from now we'll look back and see how far you've come.

5. Excellent cook.
4. Knowing the basic slave positions and instructions thereof.
3. A good listener (which should be part of obedience training, IMHO)

My number one is to learn how to communicate openly and honestly without manipulation, and know how to listen without debating.  It's surprising how difficult this really is.  Once that skill is mastered by both the dominant and submissive, everything else is much easier.  You can let the relationship dynamics develop naturally.
