Rule by fear.

That's what I have seen in motion since that fateful day. What surprised me was the degree to which people refused to let go of their fear. People will cling to a familiar fear that they understand all too well rather than even attempt to understand a hope that is as a stranger to them.

People would rather cling to fear than to recognize that fear is itself the problem.

No love at all for Alfonso Cuarón?

Damn...!

I dont know. I think that kind of shock is an UNfamiliar fear. Im not 100% sure its worn off yet. I think its a brand new world for some of us older people. Although, I must admit while in grade school we still had air raid drills in the hallway. I lived in fear that every person in charge would be killed during the 60's. Or that those in charge would kill us/me. That was a fun time to be a child no?

Maybe fear and shock then arent so new. Maybe this is how the world has been for a long long time. When the vikings landed on the shoreline, Im sure the inhabitants were first shocked then fearful. The native Americans maybe didnt fear. And look what it got them! Maybe fear is the smarter move in some cases. It could save your life instead of ending it.

We're all vunerable. And yet Im not sure we do understand or "recognize" our fears. Like the video said, knowledge is freeing. Knowledge is power. Yet I still have fear of lots of things I understand. I know the odds etc etc. But sometimes, I do still fear.  Why I even fear recession! Im a mess. lolololol

Rule by fear.

Governments have always ruled by fear; it's been understood for centuries that pride and fear activate men:

a) We're Americans; these colours don't run
b) It's them or us; if we don't kill them, they'll kill us

These tactics have been used for centuries by governments all over the world.

Propaganda is a very powerful tool; it's fairly easy to deconstruct and then reconstruct events in order to make them look like something they're not, and most people are none the wiser because they know very little about foreign cultures. They rely on pro-Western media outlets: many of which are spin machines, and 99.9% avoid a more balanced approach for fear of alienating their readership.

Ditto.

The West isn't the only media consumer with this human flaw, mind you.

Hundreds of Sudanese Muslims, waving green Islamic flags, took to the streets of Khartoum on Friday demanding death for the British teacher convicted of insulting Islam after her class named a teddy bear Mohammad.

"No one lives who insults the Prophet," the protesters chanted, a day after school teacher Gillian Gibbons, 54, was sentenced to 15 days in jail and deportation from Sudan.

I had the opportunity to hear Naomi Klein speak here in Ottawa a few weeks back.  She's an excellent orator with keen insight into the world around us.  The Shock Doctrine is a fascinating read as it studies government's behaviors during times of crisis.  She believes that governments have realized that the time to push forward policies and changes that the general populace would not typically support are in these times of crisis.  Bush knows this all too well...

I missed this post first time around. Very well said.

Unfortunately, most citizens don't see this when it occurs in their country. Instead, they swallow the bait hook, line, and sinker.

Americans are possibly the only nation in the world who will say they dont trust the government but trust them anyway.
