For the Whitney mark. Has she a set of pipes? Yes but there are dozens upon dozens of singers with pipes.. Does she have one ounce of Carpenters sweetness as a human? No. There lies the difference. Whitney was a strutting diva in her day. Carpenter has never come across as " I am better than everyone" like Whitney has done. People endear to the humble and sneer at the too proud. Carpenter was pure heart and her music reflected that directly. and Whitney seemed more concerned with her public image. Greatness is not a race related issue , greatness is something that bursts out of someone who has it inside them. Its not about who has higher or lower voice range or holds notes longer. It is what comes out through their character and their heart. Whitney threw her character out the window years ago. If you are going to lean on race, then give Donna Summer her due and drop the Whitney marking. Donna Summer ruled in her day and to my ears has better pipes than Whitney anyways. To borrow from one of her songs, Whitney never had her "dignity" taken because she literally gave it away. Not wishing to correct you but Carpenter was well known way beyond "Please Mr Postman" which makes me wonder just how unfamiliar you really are with The Carpenters because she had much bigger and better hits to her credit. My fave of hers has always been "If We Try" and it has never failed to give me goosebumps. "Hurting Each Other" has a similar effect. And I dont consider myself a Carpenters fan all that much. I have my own era and taste of music to relate to but thats not the topic here. My familiarity with her music is direct influence of my mothers tastes and albums she bought and liked. Age differences reflect that and as a child hearing her albums i was well aware i was listening to something beautifully gifted and truly great. Also not one song of Whitneys gives or ever gave me goosebumps. Another thing I wish to point out. Studio work these days and Whitneys days allowed for alot of digital tweaks and twists to manipulate recordings. In The Carpenters days it was analag studio equipment and you best have your voice on because any flaws in your voice was harder to cover up compared to today. Most voices were preserved as is. Not much studio magic to lean on. Karen Carpenter may be a dead skinny white chick but one things for sure, her fans are loyal 30+ years later. Whitney is a half dead skinny black chick so whats that all about anyways? Give me the humbler more human K.Carpenter anytime over Whitney H. throwing her known diva tantrums. I may be wrong, but i honestly feel one of K. Carpenters advantages was her character over Whitneys in the final say here. Not the all too easy to blame, skin color.
