Level -> Dan Rather sues CBS (9/19/2007 4:14:17 PM)

Dan Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit Wednesday against CBS, alleging that the network made him a “scapegoat” for a discredited story about President Bush’s National Guard service.

The 75-year-old Rather, whose final months were clouded by controversy over the report, says the complaint stems from “CBS’ intentional mishandling” of the aftermath of the story.

The lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, also names CBS President and CEO Leslie Moonves, Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone, and former CBS News President Andrew Heyward.

this ought to get interesting

I just wonder why he waited so long.... [8|]

What would really be interesting would be if CBS brought out tons of witnesses on what an arrogant, back-stabbing, power-tripping, SOB Rather is, how he ran that newsroom by fear and intimidation, and counter-sued him for the damage that was done to CBS News by his vendetta against the Bush's (Maybe someday we'll get a good book with the inside story on that).  My God, this was the network of Walter Cronkite!  That kind of credibilty was worth a lot more than Rather thinks he's entitled to.

Yeah...

You know, that *might* be a strategy, IF the investigative board convened BY CBS had found...

1) The documents HAD been forgaries.

2) The facts presented in the story wre false,

3) And/Or Rather responsible for any wrongdoing.

CBS screwed themselves when the let the Bush Suckups tell Rather that THEY would vett the story themselves.

Rich, did you ever read what Bernard Goldberg said about Rather? Interesting, indeed....... [:D]

That was a very good read.  Remember the Doonesbury run on 'Gunga Dan?'

Yes, I remember Gunga Dan [X(]

Here's what a quick google gave me.  (I love this new connection speed)

The damage was being done well before they went to air with badly forged documents.  The contempt for the intelligence of the audience was present for a long time.

When Abusing Women is Okay

  • Dan Rather #1:
"Well, as you say that, Susan, it raises the potential, the potential for a strategy that says, 'Listen, Anita Hill has raised this. In order to save Clarence Thomas's nomination we're going to have to, in effect, tear her apart.' Is that pretty much the strategy as you see it?"
--Dan Rather in a CBS Special Report during the hearings, October 11, 1991.
"It is related to what women say, and with justification, about rape charges. If you think you've been raped or you know you have and you come forward with charges, then you suddenly are the person who has to pay the price."
--Dan Rather in a CBS Special Report during the hearings, October 11, 1991.

  • Dan Rather #2:
Rather was asked about the alleged rape of Juanita Broaddrick by Bill Clinton while he was Arkansas's Attorney General:
"[E]ven if it...turns out to be true, it happened a long time ago and...they've gotta be figuring maybe, just maybe the American public has heard all they want to hear about this and are saying, you know, 'Next, let's move on to the next thing.'"
--Dan Rather on Imus in the Morning, February 23, 1999.

Rather was asked why he didn't air any reports on Juanita Broaddrick's accusation:
"I don't remember all the details of Juanita Broaddrick. But I will say that -- and you can castigate me if you like. When the charge has something to do with somebody's private sex life, I would prefer not to run any of it."
    --Dan Rather on FNC's O'Reilly Factor, May 15, 2001.

I want my newspeople to be assholes, nice people don't ask hard questions.

Bush was AWOL, the facts are there, nobody is disputing that.  The ONLY thing under dispute is the documents themselves but like all things related to Bush, they cleverly say things that will fool most of the people.  CBS should have had the balls to push that but didn't.  Rather was set up and I think it served a lot of people to let him fall and the Republic along with it.

Absolutely, 100%, agreed.  But they need to be equal opportunity assholes.  Rather wasn't.

Every time someone (pretty much anyone) starts in with Bush tricked/lied to/set up/fucked over so-and-so, it just makes laugh.  He's a moron, remember???  How dumb must they be to keep getting fooled?

Any proof of that, other than neo-cons saying so?

    He's a moron, remember???

Doesn`t take smarts to lie and cheat,or commit treason,ie."Plamegate"

If you don`t believe bush is a liar,I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

luckydog1 -> RE: Dan Rather sues CBS (9/19/2007 9:11:05 PM)

Yeah there was proof, the fake documents had a font type that was not available on comercial typwriters then, the Sub script "th".  It was obviously made on a word processor.  Also all 3 examiners they took it to said it was un verifyable.

SimplyMichael -> RE: Dan Rather sues CBS (9/19/2007 9:15:43 PM)

    Lucky,

Thanks for proving my point.  NOBODY is disputing the documents were forgeries.  You clearly got that point but you also fell for the smoke screen EXACTLY as they intended.

Here is the fact they successfully kept people like from realizing.  NOBODY is denying that the information contained IN the documents is true.  In other words, Bush WAS AWOL, the documents DO exist, it is just that these were not them.

THAT is the truth they have cleverly snuck right past you...

Owner59 -> RE: Dan Rather sues CBS (9/19/2007 9:16:04 PM)

He was still AWOL,that`s the point, regaurdless of what happened 30 plus years later.

luckydog1 -> RE: Dan Rather sues CBS (9/19/2007 9:26:09 PM)

then provide the documents micheal, since they exist.

TheHeretic -> RE: Dan Rather sues CBS (9/19/2007 9:28:25 PM)

Y'know, I might even possibly think about giving a shit about Bush not fulfilling his complete service obligation, if these same standards had been applied to President Clinton's draft-dodging.

Rather amusing direction the thread is taking, given that we are talking about a man who destroyed his credibility and career doing that exact thing...

Clinton didn`t dodge the draft. He did what all the neo-cons did,to get out of service.

The difference is that the neo-cons are chicken hawks, and Clinton was an affective commander in chief.

It`s the hypocrisy stupid.(this does not refer to anyone in particular, but rather,neo-cons in general)

This all came out, when bush was comparing his paltry record,to Kerry`s record, not Clinton`s.In case you were confused.
