winter I heard from someone on here,  that locks of love doesn't make wigs for cancer patients, only people with a certain type of disease  that makes the hair not grow,I can't remember right now , and half the time locks of love don't even pick up hair when there's hair to be donated. of course that could all be a crock of crap too.

locks
of love does NOT make wigs for chemo patients.  they make a limited number of wigs for alopecia patients (alopecia causes a person to lose all the hair on their body, it does not grow back).  much of the hair donated to locks of love is sold for operating expenses, or it is not picked up, being called unsuitable.  their business practices have improved in the last couple of years, but they dont do the great things that many people think they do.

that *is* all true according to their website.  alopecia is the condition that makes a person's hair fall out and not grow back.  www.locksoflove.com is their website.  (and i think you quoted me.)

it is not all true...copy and pasted from www.locksoflove.com

"Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers."

any diagnosis...cancer included.  Just because most often it is alopecia, doesn't mean it always is...

thank you for the correction, miss donna.

still...only 200 or so wigs a year, and most of the donations being thrown out, isnt a great record.

I wonder if the reason the hair is thrown away is because of their requirements...in addition to the length, it also must be free of any chemical treatments (color, perm etc), which is one reason I've never donated my own hair.

my oldest um did donate her hair (hers grows like crazy), she got a postcard thanking her for her donation but no mention of what was done specifically with the hair.  my littlest um cut hers to donate, it took her much longer to grow; I've hesitated to send it in, only because I can't help but wonder myself what exactly will happen to it.

(apologies to the OP for contributing to the hijack)

I found and old picture of my hair down when it reached  middle of my back and personally I think the color and the hair itself was gorgious and I won't ever be cutting it short again. well ok I can't say never ever, but nothing I forsee would make me cut it again. by the way, what color would you say my hair is? I always thought brown but it looks more reddish to me.

Also  on the topic of locks of love there's a whole livejournal page about how bad the policies of LOL is. Now  I know, I know it could all be unsubstantiated bullshit, but some of the facts like how much hair they get, and the fact they sell most of it for profit, and that you must proove finacially you need a wig from them  they don't give them to kids they sell them to families, and that it is only for long term hairloss, and chemo won't be long term, and on and on and on, are not unsubstantiated.
