This started out as an entry in my journal (which is an ironic look at this site, honest!) but I thought feedback would be interesting.

There are many forms of play in the BDSM world, some of these are dangerous and some less so. As a group we have a term for people doing things that are more dangerous than others, we call it "edge play". Sometimes I even get interesting mail from people promising to be my complete slave with no limits. (Sarcasm was invented for people like that!).

Most of the things I do are safe and sane, I tend to regard even extreme needleplay to be safe for me, as I was a fully trained body piercer for several years. However I know that some things are out of my control, so activities like breathe play are dangerous. It's hard to know what's happening to somebody if they slip into unconciousness, or even if you're damaging them inside before that happens.

I don't think that many people would argue with my assessment above, generally speaking.

However one thing that still fills me with dread, and quite frankly scares me, is the idea of playing with electrical toys.

Violet wands I think look good, nice colours, pretty shiny toys, but I'd never touch them. I've had bad experiences in the past, being electrocuted with mains voltage (+current) four times in my life.

I have this preconception that mixing electricity with slick sweaty bodies is too dangerous for me to try. I'd love to know what other people think about such toys, hence me posting this here.

Are they safe? Are there bad things that could happen in the unskilled (ie my) hands? Possible risks due to second hand equipment? Tips on safe usage?

Hello,

From what I remember, the problem with electricity is not the voltage, per se, it is the amperage. The usual description of this would be to liken a wire carrying electrical current like a hose. Voltage is the speed of the water, amperage is the volume of water passing a certain point in the house. A very fast stream of water that is .01 inches across will not kill you, the volume of water in a large lake dumped on your head may just do that.

Given this precept, certain amperages as dangerous. If memory serves me between 10 and 20 amps of energy coursing through the human body causes cardiac arrest. The heart simply goes "uh?" and stops beating and does not restart when current is removed.
Defibrillators can fix this.

Amperages over 20 amps will stop the heart while they are running through the body, but the heart starts beating again when current is removed. However, this level of electricity burns its way either over the surface of the skin or internally (yes, human blood has all sorts of salt in it and will conduct a heavy dose of electricity) between source and ground. These burns may take out vital organs and cause death, and your defibrillator may not work, and even if it does, things are charred inside and may not heal.

Violet wands and other toys of that nature have amperage well under the amount which stops the heart (as well as causes internal burning) and are probably not overly dangerous from a life or death standpoint.

However, I would suggest you find people in the community and take classes or attend seminars, as well as read what you can find about it, before zapping your loved ones.

I tend to go on the basic precept of "better safe than dead" but that is just me.

I've never used a violet wand, but would love to experience it. I have a small portable tens unit. It doesn't apply a shock but does give a wonderful sensation. I have used it on full power with no problems. I don't know the technical terms for the current it produces but i think it is very safe.

my understanding is the difference btwn a wand and tens unit is that.. a wand is static electricity which runs along the surface of the skin and the tens unit is a deep muscle stimulant which creates contractions within the musles of the body so you need to be careful about the circuit you create with the pads. Playing with the tens unit around the chest area ie.. nipple to nipple can be dangerous so I have been told. Its not something I play with . I have used the wand shocked the heck outta myself .. and other than that never had a problem.

Like you, there was a deep fear of electrical play for this girl.

But, stormi had the opportunity to learn first hand how fabulous
that can be. It's great fun and is only limited by your own imagination.

As a butcher who used mesh metal gloves for protection when using
knives, who would have thought how erotic it can be used in play in
connection with the violet wand. It's actually very yummy.....or a butter
knife... slowly moved over your skin...... there is no danger of being cut
and you know this yet it's sensation is so pinpoint that you aren't sure if
you are blind folded.

Oh and one last thing, stormi was part of a seminar on electric uses with
a dress she had..... seems the metal sequins made fabulous patterns when
a violet wand is lightly touched to them and the arch of it is awesome to watch.
You should experience watching a "light show on your own body sometime" and
all it takes is sequined material!!

While stormi understands your concerns and fears, stormi offers this thought.
Six years ago no one would have convinced stormi that she would love the feel
of a singletail or electric play or talons. Those now days.... are something that
stormi can talk passionately about to others and the experience. Because
of that passion, there has been on occassion where stormi, <Before she became
an owned slave> was allowed to share the experience with a new electric player
by using it on herself then sharing it with the new user. Somehow that seemed to
let the fear slip away.

You might try that ... ask if another submissive might show you how it feels. It's
something stormi doesn't understand but, it did make a difference and now those
it was shared with love electric.

My understanding from various classes or demos that you are unable to be seriously shocked with a violet wand. Whatever is causing the shock is either a different type of electricity or it is a different amperage or voltage. I can't remember. You can burn the skin slightly, but not electrocute someone.

I have played with a violet wand on several occasions. My favorite was when the Dominant used the violet wand as a way to light alcohol on my body. It was beautiful to watch in a mirror....it didn't hurt either...just a nice warm glow.

The heart functions on electrical impulses from the brain which regulate the time and intensity of the beats.

Im not sure I would consider it safe to play with electricity around it, since if it gets confused (fibrillation, etc) the person ends up dead...

I have seen demos where tens units where used on the chest I was told that it was a *dangerous* area and creating a nipple to nipple circuit was infact not safe..which I think I was I was saying..

I've played with them. Don't particularily like the way they feel against my skin.
Although people are right. A violet wand works off of static electricity. Which also means you can get sunburned from them.
Back in the 1800's violet wands were actually considered a medical instrument. Don't know what for. They were believed to cure some ailments though.
If you check out ebay. I forget the verbage you need to use. You can find a pleuthora of cheap violet wands. Something to do with obsolete medical or quack medical. Something like that.
I'm someone who loves playing with electricity and eletrical impulses. Your mind can control a great many things. It's rather hard to control a nerve impulse.
Most of my electric toys are homemade. They all run off a single 9 volt battery or two 9 volts.
