I can't believe a leader of a country is so ignorant. Seriously, just because the homosexuals in your society are to scared to be open about it does not mean they don't exsist. Blah

the tone of the laugh- was- a disbelief- not that he was witty.

all the complaints about abub greb- yet- agh nevermind.

Seems to me there was a time when America was like that...  in the closet.    <sigh>

On the positive side...perhaps we could send our resident homophobe there...

Okay...was just a thought.

I had to comment on this thread only because it included a reference to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as "dictator".

I'm certainly not defending him or saying he is a good guy, but it is just factually inaccurate to say he is a dictator.  He isn't even the head of state of Iran.  Ali Khamenei is the head of state of Iran.  Ahmadinejad is the head of government and does not lead the political establishment and is certainly not commander and chief of the military.  So calling him a dictator is a total misnomer.  The distinction between head of state and government is definitely murky in Iran and Ahmadinejad crosses some of those boundaries... but he is so far from having dictatorial control...

The reason this is important is because the original poster obviously felt strongly and had something that he felt was important to say.  But a lot of folks will just dismiss out of hand everything he says based on the ignorant (not using that word in a perjorative since, just as description) way in which Ahmadinejad is refered to.

I think criticism of Ahmadinejad will have a lot more impact if it is informed and accurate.  Throwing around labels meant to villainize him just cast a shadow on the credibility of the rest of what is said.

It could be true, they might have all claimed asylum in the UK.

Will leave my post which I could easily have edited but I just wish I had read the link in the OP before I wrote it.

Lee Bollinger, the Preisdent of Columbia University, even called him a dictator. In fact he called him a "petty and cruel dictator."

Outside Tehran University last December, protesers in Iran yelled "death to the dictator!" So even people in his own country refer to him as a dictator.

Ok... and that means what?  Besides that there are people who use dictator as a smear against him in both Tehran and at Columbia University...

People on collarme refer to him as a dictator... Doesn't make it true.  A dictator is someone with sole and absolute power over a state.  As I'd previously noted Ahmadinejad is not even head of state in Iran, much less the sole controller of the state.  Note none of this is a comment on his evil-ness, the validity of anything he believes or says, or whether action should be taken against him.  It is simply a commentary on the accuracy of describing him as a dictator.  Its not accurate.  A simple demonstration of this fact is that his attempt to change the law forbidding women's attendance at sporting events was vetoed by Khamenei (the Supreme Leader).  Dictator's don't get vetoed... part of the whole "absolute power" thing.  Also Khamenei is commander and chief of the military and intelligence organizations in Iran, further he controls the judiciary, and appoints members of the Guardian Council.  All additional examples of the non-absoluteness of Ahmadinejad's power.

The view that Ahmadinejad is a dictator just doesn't seem supportable despite what the president of Columbia University thinks.
