Honestly my sex ed was pretty thorough, starting at 5th grade and happening every year through 9th grade.

And it was still fairly useless because it's given without ANY context, without ANY actual discussion of relationship issues and self-esteem, without any discussion of what "sexuality" is at all.

hmmm... well, it is also in accord with muslim and christian teachings for unmarried persons. (and of course, gays shouldn't be allowed to marry so that takes care of the homosexuality problem too)

I am appalled at what is being taught in schools. No wonder there was a law passed recently which said that sex education textbooks were required to be scientifically accurate. My gosh!

The article also said that condoms, used consistenly and perfectly, reduced chance of pregnancy to 3%.

Emerald-I agree that there should be a relationship/sexuality context given to sex ed. However, I find that the sexuality bit is often left out of abstience only as well. I got a LOT of information on good ways to say no to your boyfriend, and LOTS about how to avoid situations where sex would be a problem, but little on how to deal with my own emerging (emerged?) sexuality.

I wish we could figure out a way to put the good bits of the two together--information about how to deal within relationships along with accurate information about contraception and disease.

Oddly enough, the best sex ed I got was in 5th and 6th grade at my private, fundamentalist christian school. We got all of the above-how not to have babies, but how sex was not a good thing unless you were married and how to say no. Of course, it was at a 5th grade level so I didn't get as much info as I really needed as an adolecent.

Onceburned-
I read that the law you mentioned is causing serious problems for abstience only states, becuase so many of their textbooks have factual innacuraces.

And thank you for the info. My patner was -floored- that I didn't know that stuff, as I'm usually so level-headed about contraception/STD prevention. I am smarter now.

Well, when I wrote those text books there were a number of printing errors I would like to correct now even belatedly.

This makes me pretty glad I had a reasonably comprehensive sexual education, starting with the basics of anatomy/puberty in 3rd-5th grade, talking about healthy relationships and the basics of birth control in middle school, to more specifics on birth control (including the mention of abstinence as being the only 100% effective way of preventing STDs and pregnancy) and a couple discussions on homosexuality in 10th grade.

God, I love the Wisconsin school system, which I attended for about 9 of my 13 years of public education. Most of the rest was in Florida (very shitty, to put it bluntly).

You can still get aids using condoms. Condoms won't stop aids 150 percent. just like it won't stop STDS 100 percent

I think the actual numbers are something like 97% effectivea gainst AIDS with 100% correct usage, and 98% against most other STDs.
