By the way, the word for an abbreviation is "acronym". An anachronism is something that's out of place for the time in which it's supposed to be set. So, "laser" is an acronym (Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Ratiation) but it would be an anachronism for people to be fighting with lasers in a World War II movie (since they weren't invented until 1960).

To be ultrapicky, acronyms are supposed to be pronounceable as words, like "laser", and "RAM". Things like "wiitwd" are, properly, initialisms, though I suppose you could pronounce it as "wit-wood" or "wheat-wood". But these days, "acronym" tends to get used for both kinds, pronounceable or not, so this paragraph is of historical interest only. If that.
