Here i am, thank you Erin for pointing me this way.

You friend needs to take the same precautions for bdsm that she would when approaching any type of activity she would engage in.

It depends on a lot of factors. Is she in an active flare?

If so then her sore spots of the moment need to be clearly stated ahead of play. Common sense things really.  Example; If her knees are hurting kneeling is a very bad idea, tie her to the bed making sure to put small pillows under her knees.

If she is not experiencing an active flare then normal activity is usually well tolerated.

Right now i am in a flare that has lasted for almost 9 months now, i get tired easily and have to be very careful not to irritate already inflamed joints.

But when i am not in a flare i ride, garden, lift heavy things ans am a very active person.

Play can have a beneficial effect on your RA pain, the build up of endorphins can actually ease the pain and stiffness allowing you to function better until they wear off.

Just make sure she gets plenty of rest before and after. A hot bath or shower can loosen up those stiff joints before hand to facilitate movement.

If she takes pain meds be sure you are aware of this and use caution because they can give her a higher pain tolerance than normal.

If she is taking anti inflammatory do not engage in any type of play that would draw blood as most of these do thin your blood.

If you have more specific questions feel free to email me or have your friend email me.

Erin, thanks for pointing a good sorce this way

Twice, Right now she is not in an active flare, so we are good as far as that goes.

As of right now we are not even sure play is in the future. If negotiations go any further I will take you up on your offer because I am sure she will have many more questions

Twicehappy, bless your heart.   I have RA and I have to cancel sometimes on play dates.  I just tell people that on my good days  I am great and on my bad days I am not quite so great.    I have been blessed with several good submissives that understand and we try to find ways to enjoy those great days.   I never thought in my days I would sit down and spank someone or other things but you do what you have to do.

I agree totally with the blood thining medicine as I most always have some bruising just in general play and I am not the one getting hit...

RA does give new meaning to my favorite term of play safe.

Enjoy
~J~

I have had to back off of some types of play and even simple activities like cuddling at Scooter's feet more often than i care to think about.

I am lucky though, Scooter has no problem lifting me off the floor if i have snuggled up with my head in his lap and my knees got stuck.

The most difficult thing about RA is getting folks to understand "yeah i know yesterday i carried 50 lb bags of mulch and rode for 2 hours but today i need to use a plastic coffee cup because the glass one is too heavy". And the sometimes constant state of exhaustion, those days when breathing is  enough to wear you out.

My greatest problem here was Scooter's insistence that the doctors could do something for me. That and thinking if i took the pain meds i was all better because i was functioning without saying ow or tearing up.

Every time he would say they have to be able to do something i would just want to cry. I have had this since i was 17, i cannot use the immune system controlling drugs due to a massive infection i had while on them. That pretty much leaves me stuck with the old baddies, steroids, anti inflammatory, and dope.

Finally i just sat him down and told him, no, they cannot. Why would i live with this if they could. Then he did some research of his own and he finally understands. He is so very good about the bad days. The days i stay in bed or the days i take the pain drugs (not often, i HATE the damn things) and am relatively stupid then.

It is just incomprehensible to some folks that in this day and age of miracle medicine they still have no cure for this.

The secret i have found is to never ever let it stop you. I ride, i race, i garden, i wrench, i work on the house. Some days i can accomplish anything, others i have to pick and chose what is most important to get done that day.
