I think the idea is to let the kick-ass part of our armed forces go to Afghanistan, and let the regular army take over in Iraq.

Sounds like a good idea.At the very least, it should be discussed.

The Canadians in Kandahar would sure appreciate some support. They are six times more likely to suffer casualties than coalition forces in Iraq.

I respect the Marines as an invading force (in general) and the Army as an occuping force (in general) but, in this day and age,  alot more "kick-ass" happens from the air and sea before anyone get's there. Yes - the Marines are most likely to get up close and personal with the fighting. Thats probably what you meant by "kick-ass" so I won't challenge the statement as long as the efforts of our other forces aren't trivialized.

The idea of this post is interesting. It's something to digest but a few points come to mind. When you "invade" you have to leave people behind to "occupy". If no one is occupying then the remaining enemy just goes back to where you were as you continue invading elsewhere. Do we have enough marines to do this? Before I'm jumped on by someone over this  I already know that this is borderless war and the fight isn't over territory. But you still have secure your supply lines (delivered by air and sea by the way)  unless you plan on living off the land and counting on ammunition raining from heaven.

Both of them?

(bad joke I'm already regretting it even though I'm going hit the "OK" button anyway)

Wow. A real rifle? That's unusually brazen for Canada.

In all seriousness,the Canadians,and the French,and our other NATO allies,are kicking ass,and filling body bags,in Afghanistan,where BTW,the perps of 9/11 live.

They deserve our thanks, and respect.

You could be right, I could be wrong. But I think the real problem is in Saudi.

Meet Canada The Global Arms Dealer:

http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=3668

one such deal: The new LAVs just rolled off the assemby for pickup yesterday at GM, London, Ontario branch.  The LAV's were escorted out (yesterday) by marine honor guard consisting of a flag party of Iraq veterans.

"LAVs driven by US Marines across the long Iraqi supply lines were largely made in Canada, by GM Defence in London Ontario. "With CCC's export sales and contract management assistance, GM has accumulated worldwide LAV sales of more than $2.5 billion. About two-thirds of the company's production is exported," says the CCC. Saudi Arabia is also a good customer for Canadian LAVs."

and..

"Canadians are now starting to read the fine print, and they do not like what they see. Groups across Canada are planning actions in the coming weeks and months that target corporate war profiteers. In Montreal one group is offering a bus tour of local weapons makers. Direct actions are being planned in Toronto. The 'insurance policy' might protect Canadian corporate profits in the short term, but the increasing dependence of Canadian industry on arms exports exposes the Canadian business elite to increasing risks from an angry public armed with the ugly truth about Canada the global weapons dealer."

No wonder we are now on Osamas bulletin board of 'next targets'.

I liked it better when we were thought of as having a weak army with our weaponry the equivelency of attacking with a KFC fork and spoon set.

Oh the shame of it all.
