Kalista07 -> Warding off a headache.... (10/14/2007 8:46:44 PM)

okay, so i'm sitting here and i'm contemplating ways to decapitate myself...  My head is seriously killing me.... i took five Tylenol almost 3 hours ago...It's as though it's right on the edge of becoming a full fledged migrane..... Any suggestions (including poisoning) would be helpful...
Thanks,
Kali

First off, don't ever take 5 Tylenol. Tylenol is extremely toxic in doses over what is recommended and you can literally kill your liver by taking more than what it tells you to. It's not at all like aspirin and more is NOT better.

I have been a long time sufferer of extreme headaches. What works for me is to take a very hot shower and let the hot water pour down over my head. Sometimes a hot pack (like a heated rice bag) on the back of my neck and a cold pack on my forehead. For some other people the reverse works better....but for me it only intensifies the headache.

A cup of hot coffee also helps me. Another thing that I do is to put on some very soothing music, lie down with my eyes closed and concentrate on my breathing. I count the seconds it takes to inhale...and to exhale. I visualize that the breath coming in through my nose is cool and blue and it goes directly to the pain which is hot and red. With each exhale I visualize that it takes a little bit of the hot and red and carries it out through my mouth.

Sometimes, if I catch them early enough with these techniques I can ward off a really bad one. If I try to do it too late though, the only thing that helps is trip to the ER and heavy pain killers. Headaches suck and I hope that yours ends for you soon.

Also, there is a pressure point in your hands in the meat between the thumb and forefinger. You will know when you have it because it will be uncomfortable....but steady pressure (pinch it with your other hand) for a couple of minutes will alleviate the pain on the side of the head the headache is affecting. You can repeat this several times.

There are two more at the base of the skull if there is someone there with you that can help. If they place the flat of their thumbs, one off to either side of the spine with your head bowed forward.....again, slow and steady pressure.

I have had my headaches totally abort with these techniques and have also used them with really good success on other people.

What is the possibility that you are suffering from Caffine Withdraw?
With change in the season, you might be having allergies.
You can first try an allergy/sinus tablet with a cup of coffee or green tea.

If your syptoms only get worse, you may need to see a Dr. After all, a headache is a symptom of many things including change in blood pressure, sugar levels, hormone/chemical changes, brain tumors, etc.... How is your vision? There is also a chance that you might only need glasses or a change in your prescription.

Wish you the best.

Oohhh, good advice. I heard drinking lots of water helps, but I'm not sure. All of My headaches starts from My neck and settles behind My eyes (if that makes sense). I'm trying to lay off the neck-crackings, but it gets so sore and tense....it's addicting. [:o]

GM

What sometimes works for me:
Take 1 Aleve, wait 4 hours, take 2 ibuprofen (check with your doc about that; mine says that alternating meds can increase effectiveness with OTC painkillers).
Double strength cup of Tension Tamer tea
chase with lots of cool, not cold, water (frequent sips)
Lie down in dark room with either ice pack to back of neck, alternating placement over pain's target area, switching every 10 minutes OR sock filled with dry rice & microwaved 3-5 mins (your microwave may vary) applied the same way.
Banana
Sleep.
When all else fails, sleep some more.

Ditto on the Tylenol thing mistoferin posted above.  One day after being blown off by my doctor because he "doesn't believe in treating pain" (I've since fired him as my doctor!) I wound up taking 1000 mg an hour for 14 hours and made myself exceedingly sick.  Fortunately, that was years ago and my most recent liver enzyme panel was fine - but my new doctor about had a heart attack when I told her that!

There's a reason the pill bottles come with labels & dosages, and it really is dangerous to exceed those dosages.  I was definitely 1) desperate and 2) an idiot when I took that much Tylenol.  Every time someone takes a fatal overdose of an otherwise safe over the counter medication, the FDA goes nuts - and God kills a kitten. Good luck.  Migraines are teh e-vile.

It's amazing that you came out of that okay. Glad you did! Tylenol is a drug that many assume is safe because it is over the counter. It is the #1 cause of liver failure today and overdose occurs at dosages that are very close to the recommended dose. To complicate it, hundreds of other medications have the same ingredient. So if you take a cold med that has it in it and a couple of Tylenol for the body aches....you have just taken a toxic dose. There is even a push to cut the recommended dosage in half.

Also, if you drink alcohol, do NOT take acetaminophen. A very good friend of mine went into liver failure because she took two Tylenol with a glass of red wine at dinner with her husband. She almost did not live through the experience, was hospitalized for several weeks and has permanent liver damage from it.

The warnings are not strong enough.

I'd have to think that stop typing and looking at the computer screen will help.

Have you hydrated yourself?  Perhaps with some gatorade or high electrolyte?  Taken a hot shower?  Slept?  Masturbated?

Is this a new phenomenon?  What are your normal coping methods?

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 2:34:11 AM)

for my headaches, i take 4 ibuprofen(my dr approved this).  thats the same as one rx strenght...i dont do it often, but its the only thing that works for me.  and once the pains not so bad, i masturbate....it works every time for me.

Thats the same pattern my headaches take. Like a question mark that has the dot at the base of my neck, around my shoulder blade actually, and the hook part behind one eye.
I use Rx meds but I find that the one thing that REALLY helps to get rid of my headaches is ICE.
I know it sounds awful, but it helps a lot. I put one ice pack to the forehead on the side with the eye that is affected and the other along my occipital ridge, and if I have a third it goes over my shoulder blade on the affected side.
Ice not only masks pain but works as a vasoconstrictor. Many headaches are caused by vasodilation, so it makes total sense.
If I cant stand the idea of being all packed in ice, I take a hot pack and put it at the base of my spine or over my chest.

divi -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 6:40:04 AM)

sometimes when I get a headache..I sign off and lay down

KatyLied -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 8:06:10 AM)

I find tylenol to be useless.  I usually go for caffeine.  If it's bad enough I try to sleep it off.  I usually get the stabbing behind the eye or sinus headache.

astarri -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 8:14:46 AM)

i take advil i find it is more effective and yeah get off the puter cause it can make it worse. Go lay on your back perfectly flat and slowly tell each of your body parts to relax taking time to individually tell each of your facial features to do so. You will be amazed how much tension you hold in your face when battling a headache.

oh i should really look at what time the original post is!! Hope you're feeling better

freyjasdottir -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 9:49:21 AM)

When my migraines get bad I lay down in the complete dark and try to sleep it off.  I don't even have an alarm clock in my room for that reason, nothing but lightbulbs to shut off.  My UM gets them too so I put black curtains in his room and since he has a bunk I drape blankets from the top to make it more dark and cave like.  I've had some perscription meds but they don't help much and I don't like how I feel afterwards.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 11:57:22 AM)

Interesting to see Tylonal isnt affective for any one else. Tylonal don't do diddly shit to help my headaches, or my aches and pains. I take aleeve, and it's the ONLY thing that helps. not even my prescription pain pills have helped.

I love excedrin, though they can plateu at a certain point.

BossyShoeBitch -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 12:56:36 PM)

As an almost daily headache or migraine sufferer, I  think all of the suggestions so far are right on target.  I have a few suggestions to add..
What LA said was exactly right.  Many headaches occur to to dehydration.  In general, once you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.  It's always a good idea to drink water all throughout the day, thirsty or not... You need to be able to differentiate between a stress headache, a cluster headache and a migraine..  Next, (don't laugh) brush your teeth, toungue and palate with a nice minty toothpaste..(I said not to laugh!  It really helps me!)..  Then, by all means crack your neck!  Stretch your neck muscles too.. When you go to a Chiropractor and get adjusted, it helps to relieve much of the muscle tension that factors into a developing headache.. (Massage works wonders as well)..
Pay attention to the types of foods you eat.  There are numerous migraine triggers (easily researched on the internet).  Find yours.  Mine are sugar, chocolate and alcohal..

If you wear contacts, take them out and put your glasses on..
Get your ass off the computer!
Don't read or watch TV..

I feel for you!

GoddessMine -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 1:11:28 PM)

Wait, are you sure cracking your neck is good for you? I've heard so many differing opinions on this - and from My experience, I crack My neck, it feels like bliss, but then My head starts throbbing and aching a few minutes later.

Love,
GM

BossyShoeBitch -> RE: Warding off a headache.... (10/15/2007 1:14:55 PM)

Sure, there are differing schools of thought on cracking anything... Same goes for Chiropractic care.. For me, helps immensely.  Sometimes in the course of doing yoga or just stretching my neck muscles, my neck cracks anyway...
