Well, what can I say, I've started diving in headfirst here.  Right now I'm in the process of reading everything I can get my hands on and asking around for advice and opinions, so here's my question for the day: I'm looking at assembling a basic sort of D/s "toolkit" and I was hoping to solicit some suggestions from the more experienced people on this site as to the types of items they keep readily to hand.  This can be anything from custom-made items to everyday odds and ends used in the role of pervertibles.  What's in your kit?  Now, I'm not looking to spend thousands of dollars or build my very own dungeon -- not yet, anyway -- and my current address is, unfortunately, quite a distance from the nearest sex shop, although the wonder of the Internet can, of course, alleviate that somewhat, though there's probably no substitute for handling an item physically before purchase.  Still, it would be a lot easier to browse through a hardware store or housewares department right at the moment, although a few custom items would probably be welcome.

So, there we are -- what's in your kit, what should the basics be, and where are some less-than-obvious places to obtain your toys and gear?  Bring on the suggestions, and thank you in advance everyone.

Obviously it's kind of hard to say what the basics are, because we all have our own things we're into. Some are right into electrical play, it leaves me cold. I'm not into strapons, but many are, so they'd say it's a must.

Things like wrist cuffs, ankle cuffs, collars, chains, canes, whips, etc., are all available online, if that's your option at the moment. My sub made his own spreader bars. Ropes and that kind of thing can be purchased at hardware shops. Gags can be as simple as a tie or a scarf, belts can be use to immobilise someone, you get the rift.

Think about what interests you have, what things you would like to try. It doesn't have to cost a fortune to set up some simple toys. A peek around your garage, wardrobe and laundry cupboards can be like Aladdins caves if you look at them with your "BDSM" eyes!!!

walmart, sad but true. the crafts department carries nice Drings and nylon ribbon. there are all kinds of goodies in the hardware, auto, and garden/outdoors departments. and in home-goods, you can get bed sheets and can be transformed into very useful and unique looking gear. and don't forget to take a trip down the pet isle. pick up some lube and band-aids in the pharmacy, and get some milk from the grocery-side, you're out anyways        phoenix

Some basic bondage stuff:   Ropes, ankle cuffs, wrist cuffs, double snaps, etc

Some basic impact stuff:   a soft thumpy flogger from deerskin, a heavy mildly stingy flogger from suede or buffalo, a riding crop wth a wide flapper on it (not one of those horrible skinny ones), a leather paddle, a leather strap

Some basic other stuff:   clothespins, bunny fur, blindfold, some good CDs to scene to, candles, etc

Since you are asking about common items that make good play bag/kit additions here are a few suggestions. (I'll avoid the obvious whips/chains and sex toys, since plenty of other folk have already brought these up.) Some good items you can pick up at your local grocery/hardware/dollar store:

> first, get some large ziplock bags. They are perfect for keeping various items seperated in your playbag. and they also keep "contaminated" items (like used sex toys) from coming in contact with other items until you get a chance to clean them.

> rope. Several lengths varying from about six feet to 15 feet would be useful. Make sure it's of the good kind, a weave type without the central core that could slip. (check online bondage sources for what to really look for in good rope)

> clips. Either clothes pins, or those large plastic clips meant for reclosing potato chip bags... Great for use on skin, nipples, genitalia, etc.

> Candles. Either to romantically light the scene, or to slowly drip on a sub. Low temperature, non-scented types are best. Currently, there are colored candles that can be used (in my case, I carry a UV light and flourecent candles) but be sure to test them before using them on someone. You want to cause shock and warmth, not take their skin off.

> ace bandages. No, not for accidents. Those nice wide beige colored bandages are a best kept secret of bondage. They are soft, bind securely, and can be released in moments. (I recently saw a Dom who had dyed his black, and the look was really quite lovely.)

> condoms
>lube
>bactine
>moisturizing lotion
>massage oil
>packets of hot chocolate mix (I'm from Colorado. Hot chocolate is a great way to do aftercare)
> small box of assorted band aids
>small tube of neo-sporin.

15' isn't really long enough for rope. One 40' piece for whole body ties. Two 25' pieces. Four 10' pieces.

Personally I like a soft poly braided with a core. I don't like rough rope on me. Just go to Home Depot and feel the different kinds.

We don't wash it or whip the ends, it's cheap enough that we just replace it regularly and use the old pieces in the garage, tying things to the roof of the car, etc.

I agree with what MissMagnolia said in her post but would add that you need to be careful about the quality of some of the stuff for sale online: it's cheap but likely to fall apart after one use so try to buy from places that other people recommend. The lowest price stuff isn't necessarily the best value.

Hot chocolate packs - what a great idea!  It gets cold in Columbus too.

I carry one piece of 70 foot soft nylon rope, braided (not twisted) , no fiber core.  Hard to describe accurately but it's the right stuff.  Bought my last piece from Garr's ropes at COPE in Columbus.  Did I mention that she came just from being tied in it the first time?!

The 70 foot length makes breast bondage followed by a bondage harness (nawa shibari) possible on most large women.  Keeps me in demand at parties. :)

After that it's medic scissors (never had to use them) and, well, so much more.  My favorite toy in the bag is the black straitjacket with the split crotch straps.  Yummmm.

my recomendations for just-in-case-absolutes for the toy bag - emt (medic) scissors with the hard plastic tips covering them, a small but powerful flash light, a box of various sized bandaids (even if you never intend to break the skin, accidents happen, sometimes because of the bottom...like leaning back or turning at the wrong time), and a huge box of alcohol swabs...these are great for cool down if you have broken the skin too....lol....the sting and the cool sensation on hot flesh all for the sake of cleanliness...

other than that...its all what are you into...sensation or pain? bondage or impact? cause if you're main purpose is to get her strapped down so you can beat the heck out of her....a whole bunch of rope in your bag is just going to take up room....but if your main purpose is to create intricate bondage work then why would you carry 15 different pain impliments...or if you like sensory deprevation and creating a sense of anticipation...do you really need 20 canes? or maybe you do....what kind of play do you like...what kind of play does your partner like or the people you want to play with like....also what are you skilled at...some parties its ok to get "lessons" on how to do a certain activity, but most i have been to...its about playing, not teaching, there is a lot of time for teaching...play time is play time...so if you don't know how to throw a single tail well enough to play with someone yet...it doesn't do much good to stick it in your bag and take it with you to the party....

that being said....from the submissive side...and a broke submissive at that...i am very slowly working on building my toy bag, which i think is very important for a submissive who plays casually to have...for safety reasons, in the mean time, when i get beat or otherwise played with toys from someone elses bag, i try to stick to non-porus, inorganic materials or cleanable things or replaceable things (crackers on snake whips are the things i can think of most specificaly replaceable)....and my toy bag currently consists of a very nice quirt that is very yummy, a flogger i won as a door prize, and a victor tella whip that i am very proud of...its yummy...but i haven't had it used on me yet... (16 plait 4 ft black and purple kangaroo hide signal whip - and it will only be used on me...) oh and whatever i can make out of rope...i ocassionally go to home depot and buy a package of 100ft of rope and cut it into smaller pieces as i need it....don't ask me what kind, i never remember till i am standing in front of it...a monkeys fist knot makes a great ball gag that works with my tmj, btw....

anywho...thats all for now
chelle

My toy bag currently has:

EMT shears, glucose tablets, betadine swabs, chop sticks, rubber bands, a half drinken bottle of water, and a pride pin.

Rope:

6 X 12', 3/8" mfp, 1 additional in the form of a bit style rope gag, slightly soiled (mmm slobber!)

2 X 25' 3/8" mfp, slightly lubricated....

1 X 50' 3/8" mfp, slightly dirty....

1 X 100' 5/8" mfp, clean and neatly packed...

1 rope flogger, slightly tangled

Yeah, my toy bag kind of got shoved in the closet after I got home from Folsom, I really need to go to the laundrymat.

I will hopefully soon be adding (in no particular order) a small, general purpose first aid kit, a sharps unit, a new set of hospital restraints (I loved my old ones to death), a deerskin, a bullhide and a horse hair flogger, a "full set" of 6mm jute, and an iron-on patch I got while in SF.  My current "toy bag" is also being replaced with my smallest rolling carry on as a general purpose toy bag, and I'll be using my current one for when I just want to carry a shoulder bag for a specific purpose.

Let me know where you get your new set of hospital restraints.  We have a custom made set of leather wrist restraints that have seen a lot of love over the years and they can slip out of them now.  (Bad kitty!) Those are being relegated to ankle cuff duty now, and hospital restraints may be the way to go.

I got my old set completely by chance, they were in a box of stuff that came home from the hospital after a relative had a major surgery. They're still functional.... I just wore them as accessories out dancing for many years, so they're a little on the funky lookin' side. I'm not entirely certain where I'm getting a new pair from yet.

Oh, and I forgot.... add a riding crop to my toybag, courtesy of Jorge (my nickname for a ponyboy friend of mine).... actually, the slobber on my rope bit is courtesy of him as well, but I digress.

Wow, that's a nice site; thanks, chellekitty.  There's a distinct lack of adult stores in my area -- even if I didn't actually buy anything, being able to browse and see what's available is always helpful.  It'd be more helpful if there was someplace I could actually physically handle the products, but sometimes geography just gets in the way.

This site is excellent too for institutional restraints http://www.medicaltoys.com/institutional.htm
this particular item is one of my favourites http://www.medicaltoys.com/ultimate-in-sensory-deprivation.htm  maybe one day:)
as for my toybag...EMT Scissors. saran wrap, varying colours, bondage tape, ...re useable and it comes in purple now, purrr, a couple of rolls of vet wrap a soft facial brush and a pan scrubber, bunny fur,  picnic table cloth weights are heavier than usual nipple/genital clamps and have things like ladybirds or bows hanging off them (dollar store special) first aid kit, $1 cheap shower cutain for messy play, a whartenburg wheel, blindfold, box of disposable earplugs, wrist and ankle cuffs,  then whatever toys I need I pack as my planning takes over, however the above usually stay in  my bag all the time... my favourite places to find  evil idea toys are dom(home) depot, walmart, and dollar  stores.

Thanks for the additional advice tot he OPon rope guys. Rope isn't really my primary thing, I usually just carry enough to do either a good spread eagle, or maybe some wrist to wrist, ankle to ankle type bondage....or wrist to ankle... thigh to thigh... elbow to elbow....  Well, you get the idea.

Generally, I prefer leather restraints. I just like the way they look. Dressage that has no other pourpose than to be kinky... black leather contrasting against skin, and it's usually much quicker to release if there's a problem.

Wow, that's a heck of a list -- thanks for your responses, everyone.  I definitely have more than enough ideas to get an entire closetful of stuff, likely far more than I could ever carry without employing a minivan or a truck.

I do have a question for Lucylastic (or anyone else interested in answering): what, exactly, is a Whartenburg wheel?  I tried looking it up in a couple of different wikis, but could find nothing on that particular item; could someone describe one for me, please?
