My boyfriend and I are very curious about the sub/dom lifestyle, and we are still both very new to it. We are very deeply committed to eachother and the idea of him collaring me has been discussed many times. The only thing we have an issue with is: We have kids, and we're not sure if it is appropriate or how to go about when to wear it etc.. anyone's advice or imput would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does it need to be a collar, or would a piece of jewelry for outside wear work? Maybe a bulkier chain or something, depending on your sense of style. A choker might work as well.

I have my slave wear a simple black leather bracelet that I made him. On the inside it is embossed with the word 'slave'. I also know people who wear simple chains with lockets, locked clasps, etc. These are passable in public, as well as in front of your UMs.

Edited to add: That is the 24/7 'collar'. Play collars can be quite elaborate, should you wish them to be.

i have two UMs and wear my collars 24/7 along with  my ankle chains (with locks and cuffs attached) and my "Story of O" ring.  i merely told them upon receiving my eternity collar that it was jewelry ...and they have accepted everything bestowed on my body as such. i have actually worn my "jewelry" to PTA meetings to parent-teacher conferences and no one (including principals and other parents) bats an eye or asks why i wear a steel collar around my neck. it's a part of me for life ...i would feel terribly naked if i didn't have them on.

Like mentioned before, you can wear other things like rings or bracelets.
But in my opinion nothing beats a good collar

So...

Why not simply wear something over the collar? A turtleneck or a hoody or anything really could cover up the collar if you feel you have to hide it from your kids. At least that's what I did when I was in highschool and collared.

Having mutliple collars can ease this process too. So in otherwords you can have a heavy duty leather collar for the bedroom, and a simple skinny dog collar for every day life. You might even make a necklace that functions as a collar so it can be disguised.

A collar can be anything that is special to you both. I have a collar for playing and I collar I wear everyday, that by looking at it would be a normal piece of jewelry worn by anyone. A collar is what you make it.

You don't need a collar to submit to him, a collar is a symbol no more - unless you're attaching chains to the d-rings.

Mine's a silver necklace with a heart pendant. Since the chain's been broken once it now gets removed for play. There's a leather play collar if he feels like tying things to it.

No hijack intended here but.....WOW!  I admire you.  I also want to be open and 'out' and hope I have your guts and grace when it happens.

p.s.  what is a story of o ring?  can you msg me other side?

Your collar doesn't have to necessarily be an actual collar.  Mine for example because i lead a very professional life is a ring.

just curious, but how does telling folks it is jewelry, and not mentioning the symbolism equate to being open and out?

obviously, as long as you don't tell them the truth, few are going to have a problem with it.
if you do decide to tell them(and anyone else who asks or will listen) the truth, you are opening yourself up to potential ridicule and ostracizing from your local vanilla community...for you and for them.

minor hijack #2 - sorry, OP

truth be told - when i first received my collar, i was nervous as well as excited showing it off and what better place to do it was at a metal rock concert! lol - actually i had more curious stares from wild fans (one guy almost fell down the stairs staring so hard at my neck) than the guys wearing rainbow-colored mohawks.

yet walking around like this in my neighborhood does take a whole of guts and gumption since i don't see many Black people "dressed" like me. yet i enjoy being unique walking my kindergarten UM with my collars, wrist and ankle chains, and ring - no one asks about why or the symbolism and i don't have to tell.
