Does anyone know of a correlation between Seasonal Affective Disorder and anxiety attacks/panic attacks.

Haven't had one all summer and then today, bam! Beginning to wonder if it's the noticeable loss of daylight that sets it off.

I wouldn't be surprised- most of those things tend to feed off eachother.  Just stay on the meds, eat well, up the exercise some, sleep well, and do as much as you can to stay "normal" and work on the anxiety source issues.

Time to buy a light box, I guess. They're all so damned ugly though.

I'm not on meds. Not bad enough to go back on yet. I might if it wasn't for the weight gain.

The source of the anxiety disorder is genetic, dates back to my great grandfather, no info further back since nobody knows exactly where he emigrated from.

They're mainly manageable.

have you tried abortive anxiety meds (benzos) rather than preventative anxiety meds? if its seasonal, it wouldn't make sense to me to have to titrate on and titrate off a medicine, but i am not a doctor either...just a lot of personal experience with psych meds...or is there a reason you can't take benzos?

also on the natural light replacement....have you tried a reflective lamp with a UV (or it might have been another natural light) light bulb from the reptile section of the pet store? 30 minutes a day under it...no box needed, worked wonders for my mom when she was having problems with not getting enough natural light....

good luck
chelle

A predisposition towards anxiety disorder may be genetic.  That doesn't mean you MUST have them and are incapable of reducing or eliminating them from your life.

A book called:  Hope and Help For Your Nerves--Authored by Claire Weekes.

It's an amazing read.  I really recommend it.

There is no one stressor that is setting off the Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I am managing them fairly well. Unfortunately I think that part of it is being in the last months before becoming fully menopausal and since HRT won't be given until six months after my last period, I am just going to have to manage.

Which is why I asked about a light box to get me through the low light period which is also the last six months before I can get HRT.

Chelle, what are benzos? Not familiar enough to guess at the abbreviation.

Klonapin, alprazolam, diazepam, lorazepam are a few benzodiazepines - mild tranquilizers.

There is also a medication called Buspar - it's not a benzodiazepine so it's not addictive at all and it is an anti anxiety medication.  It's generally used for mild anxiety, i am not sure how well it would work for real full blown panic attacks.

my daughter suferes from panic attacks and she notices a change when the season changes from summer to winter.

having xanax in my purse stops 99% of anxiety from turning to panic....but it was very hard work 15 years ago when i was home bound with panic attacks......i can remember leaving to drive 50 miles, white knuckles, deciding ill either make it or die trying.....

i took the preventative drugs for about 2 years, but after learning the coping techniques, just having xanax is a safety net for me...

good luck.....i guess i didnt give any advice huh? lol

sorry been on the porch again

~fr~

Melatonin supplements might be worth looking into.
It's used for treating SAD, as I recall.
Might give fewer attacks.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Different things can cause panic attacks.  I almost had one yesterday, and it was very not.  It could have been some medicine I am taking for a cold that triggered or stress of some kind.

Regards, MissSCD
