It's one of those interesting bits of science theory... basically, there is something called Mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down through the maternal line. Common elements have been found in virtually everyone who's ever had their DNA inspected, giving rise to the theory that we all have a common female ancestor, way back. The Pop Science press, naturally, named her Eve :-)
If you accept that, at one time, the entire pre-human population was just a few individuals in the Rift Valley somewhere, it's entirely plausible that one tiny fragment of that population survived and spread, while the rest died off. Think of it as evolution in action...
