Well, *I* can explain my facination for both (done enough therapy that I found out).
The mumification is a throwback to babyhood. Literally. When in the womb, you are confined and constricted, you are helpless and safe. You are comforted by this dull red light and by a heartbeat. But the constriction and the lack of space to move in is key here.
In experiments done in Russia of all places, they found that wrapping newborns in mulitple layers of blankets, pinning every limb in the blankets caused them to cease crying. It wasn't the warmth, it was the constriction, like when in the womb. And for reference I am talking about babies less than 10 minutes old.
For me, I remember being wrapped like that and placed near the home heater we had when I was small since we didn't have much room or space or furnature. I slept in the bottom dresser drawer and during the winter (I was born Jan 12) placed near the heater at night to keep me from getting too cold. My mother wrapped me so tightly that I couldn't move.
I loved it.
I still love it. And this dovetails with my love of restraints, my love of cages, my enjoyment of breath play and my desire to be mumified as well as my need to be warm while sleeping. All of them constrict in different ways, all of them restrict my movements, all of them make me SAFE. It makes no sense, but that's how it is.
I suspect that it's that way for everyone who likes mumification and cages. But I could well be wrong.
