Thanks to everyone who posted on my "What's in your kit?" thread -- all the suggestions are very much appreciated.

The question for today is: what makes a good flogger?  What kinds of materials produce what sorts of effects (i.e deerskin versus buffalo hide versus plain old leather, etc.)?  What lengths produce which sensations?  What sorts produce "thumpy" pain as opposed to "stinging" pain?

As a corollary, what types of floggers/quirts/whips/paddles does everyone out there prefer, and why?  Naturally, everyone will have their own tastes, but I ask out of curiosity.

Thank you all, and happy spankings.

Every type of leather has unique characteristics. Here is my very incomplete list of how different types work / feel when used for flogger tails:

Deer - very very soft. It is almost impossible to hit someone too hard with deerskin.

Elk - A bit thicker and heavier, with more thud than deer but still quite soft.

Bison - Soft and thuddy but  without much sting. Bison can give a real thuddy whallop if you use a lot of wide tails.

Cowhide - A HUGE range of sensations. Garment leather can rival deerskin for softness. Harness leather was used to make the original prison straps for a reason. It hurts like a mo fo!! Cowhide is available in so many thicknesses, tempers, tanning processes etc thats is very hard to make any general statement about how it feels.

Some general comments though:

Narrow tails = sting
Wide tails = thud
Rounded ends sting less than square cut, angle cut sting the most
Long, wide tails tend to fly open (you'll hit a larger area, more thud)
Long, thin tails tend to stay together (you'll hit a smaller area, more sting)
A good rule of thumb for length of the tails is 2-3 time the handle length.
Rules of thumb are sometimes very wrong. One of my favorite floggers has a 14 inch handle and 9 inch tails, go figure.
Static balance and dynamic balance in a flogger are two VERY different things.
Aforementioned 14 inch handle, 9 inch tail flogger has great dynamic balance and lousy static balance.

Best advice I received about buying a flogger. Buy whatever feels right to you not what anyone else says is right.

In a flogger, I like elkhide for a basic one.

Bison has more thump, and oiled leather, more bite.

I tend to use matched doubles during play-florentine.

For sting I like a braided cat-light but capable of inflicting pain without welts.

Quirts with a good oiled fall are nice for the "line of fire" sensation-and you can snap with them. Always good to get a bottom up on her toes-and dancing..
