So just after I decided to have surgery on my back I end up having a blood clot (pulmonary embolism) in my right lung. The doctors say I will be on blood thinners for a minimum of one year. That will prevent me from having another embolism but it also makes it almost impossible to have any kind of surgery. They are not going to take me off of it even though I'm in pain 24/7. This is putting a strain on my relationship I'm sure you can relate. With out going into great detail about why the doctors aren't being cooperative is there anyone who knows what can be said to the doctors so they can at least give me some physical therapy or maybe a tens unit or something non narcotic for this pain.
Thanks, Phoenix

Are you seeing a pain specialist? Because if not, then ask for a referral to one.

Ask the haematologist if you would be able to stop the warfarin or whatever you are taking for a couple of weeks leading up to surgery and then be restarted on it all again after surgery.  I had a PE and was on warfarin for 6 months, maybe after 6  months he would consider ceasing the medication for you.

And as Celeste said, get a referral to a pain management specialist if you haven't already seen one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I went to the pain specialist and you would think that they would at least refer me to a physical therapist but no. They said PT would do me no good boy I'd like to spank these people. I guess after demanding several times they got scared of being sued because all I was asking for was some time in the therapy pool which I've been told works very well. Oh well it doesn't hurt to ask.
Thanks, Phoenix

Keep asking, and continue to ask for referrals until you find someone to listen to you. From my experience many doctors have trouble gauging a patients pain so seeing someone that specializes in it makes a difference.

There is no reason to live with pain if you have medical insurance. Even without insurance there is massage therapy, swimming and stretching to help. Some may holler at me, but smoking weed makes a difference for me.

Good luck and be persistant!!

You can get a tens unit online...........and I was gonna say smoking just like the post above me lol.  Except that since it affects your lung, I'm sure smoking wouldn't help - but there's always brownies, tea.......basically anything you can cook/heat up ;)  I'm blanking on the name, but the new Michael Moore documentary on healthcare gives some good information on getting FREE healthcare - if you're willing to make a flight.  Sounds crazy, but I'd say at least give watching a chance.

I've never been on blood thinners, so could you explain to me why you cannot use any pain medication because you take blood thinners? Are they contraindicated?

If you are on Warfarin or a similar thinning agent not all avenues for anelgesia are closed to you. The only anelgesics that you need to avoid are Aspirin containing ones and any anti inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen. If you are having your INR tested every week or so, as you should be you may be responding well to the drug and be able to lower the dose significantly and be able to think about surgery.

I am so sorry about your set of circumstances.

I only have one suggestion which would be to get a referral to a pain specialist or better yet a multi-diciplinary pain clinic at your nearest university hospital.
From what you alluded to you seem locked into your current healthcare providers, however with some research you can likely obtain the information you will need to make a compelling case for the help that you need.

Best wishes,

aJ

You do not want to mess around with pulminary embolisms.  Scary stuff.

Without knowing your back issues, have you tried chiropractice, accupuncture, accupressure, or other forms of alternative pain management?  I wish you the best.

im in the UK so might be different over in the States.

all the best and good luck

Are you able to take codeine based medications?  I was able to continue taking those while I was on warfarin without a problem.  I am on daily injections for a month following some more surgery that I had and once again my doctor has said that taking my codeine based medication daily is fine.  Is there a heated pool nearby that you could go to?  Heat packs or cold packs also work for me as does any type of exercise (the program was set up and is checked by a physiotherapist) as long as I do some every day - such as walking.

That would be nice but seeing as I've lost 30% of my right lung from the embolism that would be unwise.lol

I can take narcotic meds but they make me forget things.lol I cant take any kind of anti inflammatory meds like plain old aspirin or ibuprofen. Ibuprofen provided me with some really good pain relief but sigh I cant take it any more.

Well that was just a lighthearted suggestion added to the more serious suggestions I made.

Added:
(plus there are thingies like brownies, cookies or pot butter which I have a recipe/formula for. the butter can be used in a ton of different things. however this was a last resort sort of tactic after exhausting other doctors and pain clinics)

Yes i'm being tested once a week. Not to complain but they fucked that up as well I'm suppose to be around 2.5 they brought me to a 14! whoops get the vitamin k stat! My response to cumadin is good except for some of the side affects like bruising/bleeding but because I am still in danger of another embolism they wont take me off the cumadin.

Yes I've done that and it looks like I'll be driving 70 mls to get what I need. The only trouble with that is it hurts to drive more than 15 min.lol

Something the doctor had sugested to me was to keep a diary of the pain i was having on a day to day basis. On a scale on 1-10. It took him a while (7months) but he finally got the clue that the meds he had me on really wer not working and that the pin management was going in the wrong direction. If you think that a hot whirl pool will help ( one of the few things that help me) then draw a hot bath and relax. As always be carefull what pills you pop I would hate to see you get addicted to the scripts while trying to get rid of the pain.
I wish you the best of luck in this
