Chelle,
The quadratic formula is algebra.. It's a polynomial equation..

LaM.. Did I mention that semantics makes me hot too?

didn't you see the second half? about graphs...there is no point to a quadratic equation other than to plot points on a graph...and that reminded me of geometry...sorry...bad memory associations....lol...

There's an infinite number of quadratic equations, my dear.

The quadratic FORMULA, on the other hand, is:

(where the equation takes the form ax2 + bx + c = 0).

So, yeah.  Spelling matters.  I'm typically one of the first to knock it as a zero-order mental feat, largely being little more than memorization, but, hey, even that's indicative of some sort of mental proficiency.  The grammar accompanying that spelling can be argued for as a first-order feat, so the two together can be telling.

PS-
One should also keep in mind that some people use spell check, so perfect spelling cases- those cases which, despite length, lack typos or so- might be tossed as not actually an indication of spelling but use of a program.

let's look at this for just a second, and look at "mental profciency"...a PS, is a post-script, it is what is added after you have closed a missive and signed your name..another thought on the end of a message without a close or conclusion & signiture, is a paragraph....

spelling is an art, not science.  It is an agreed apon vauge tabulation of set values for given words, Mr. Webster defined many of those set values but even he and Mr. Franklin disagreed, so at least in english, the wonderufl bastardized langauge that is it, it's guess work...agreed upon guess work, but not more or less than that.  Folks who have an anal compulsion about spelling, have at it, I don't pay your bills or tell you who to hang out with, but please don't take it like a sign of doing something right, you're just doing what they told you in school..the same school who told you to hide under wood in case of a nuclear blast and that ketchup is a vegatable.

It amazes me that spelling sticklers rarely know how to fix their car, or how to find someone they actually trust to do it, how to do long division in their head or how to build a brick wall without having to take a load of bricks away or have to bring another load up to the worksite.  Researchers tell us that intellgence is at least part problem solving, so knowing how to use a dictionary would come under that heading but so is the art of communication.  As someone said much more elequoently than I above, if the message is clear the form is secondary.

The ability to write clearly is more important than to spell perfectly.

It always amuses me on this board to see this arguement that a bunch of sexually adventurous people would blindly, willingly, happily, follow a puritanical prude in his little venture into the definining the language for the rest of us.  but perhaps its the same people who will spend 400 dollars buying a set of stocks rather than making one.

not knowing the difference between a noun and a verb and an adjective and an adverb is a much bigger turn off than spelling or grammar.....

I don't know the difference between a noun and an adverb....does that mean you don't love me any more chelle?

I graduated from college with a 3.98GPA. The ONLY class I didnt make an A in was english. In fact I barely passed at all and if my english professor hadn't gone and gotten into a car accident and spend the last half of the semester in the hospital I probably wouldn't have passed at all. All our substitute made us do for the rest of the semester was multiple choice worksheets (in college, yes!) and we were able to work together. We also had to write essays at the beginning of each class but because they were all considered "first draft" stage, we were graded on content and not grammer. I have often said on these boards that the main reason I became an engineer was because it was not nesecary to be able to spell to do math. I can build you a house from the ground up. I can calculate loads on support beams with out a calculator usually, but please dont ask me to spell anything correctly and I generally don't take the time to use spell check either. Yes, I'm lazy. My punctuation isn't always that great either. However, a persons grammer, punctuation, and ability to cohearently string together thoughts are actually very important to me. I can understand a missed period or apostrophe. I can look past waht instead of what occasionally. But if it adds up to be at least one mistake a sentance, and the sentances just don't make sense, I stop reading. If I have to struggle to come up with the meaning a person was trying to come accross with, why would I want to waste my time? I know of several people on this board with dyslexia and several who are struggling with english as a second language. I actually know one person who has both of those problems, and I can still converse rather well with them and I think they still come accross as an intellegent person. Its when I get chat messages that read "how r u? I m gr8, wuld u lik 2 cht?"...that I really start clicking ignore fast.

It is generally pretty obvious, even when a person has made a spelling or grammatical error or two, that they have the ability to converse intellegently. What matters most to me is the thoughts a person is getting accross.

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: spelling (10/25/2007 7:33:50 AM)

Now English just wasn't my thing,History,math and football was and thanks to a sexy teacher that did my home work for me I carried a pretty good avg At West Virginia University ...She too love my manly body and graded it an A PLUS...MY sentence structure could use some work,my spelling is avg or better..WE men we are in a hurry tend to slap any thing down....

i still love ya...'cause you may not know the difference between the definition of a noun and an adverb but you known how to use them...so it's all good...btw...a noun is a person, place or thing...and an adverb is a word modifying a verb...like in the sentence: "She ran quickly." She is a noun, ran is a verb, and quickly is a adverb.

edited to add: if you want to get technical she is a personal pronoun...

RRafe -> RE: spelling (10/25/2007 7:50:58 AM)

I think I do tend to look at syntax and the ability to express oneself in a choherent manner as marks of an intelligent and well ordered mind. The sort that I could feel the ability to communicate with effectively. And yet, I see others with mental abilities so far beyond my own-I wonder if I would bore them to tears. Which is not a feeling of insecurity on my part-just that we might not be well suited to each other.

So there is that dratted bell curve thing again. Just find the levels that match your comfort zones.

I know people who have extremely high  IQs yet when comes to what is the capital of Washington dc they do not know. I even know people who think the world is still flat. believe or not there are people who believe the Holocaust never happen that is was all made up hype for the war..  So I llike this concept best. YOu can lead a horse to water. But you can not make it drink.  yep

Laziness

Hi Pernicious

There is at least one incurable medical condition for bad spelling...Dyslexia. There may be more but on a personal note I suffer from dyslexia and can tell you I don’t even know when I spell a word wrong. I often reverse letters …form when meaning from. I can look right at it and form looks to me like from. I have to run everything through a speller or be ridiculed as an idiot…although I may be just that.

With my dyslexia I don’t process hearing input properly all the time…Otherwise I hear a word differently then you so phonetics do not work for me.

Thank heaven for spellers and net slang

PS I like Mark Twains take on spelling... I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.

Butch

Horses balk at drinking water that doesn't taste like the water in their own barn. The trick to convincing them to drink it anyway is to pour some apple juice on the top. Once they've tried it, they'll keep on drinking. Persuasion or seduction, not force.

My brain might be a little cheese-whizzy, but if I recall correctly, quadratics can be more than a second degree formula. :)

Maybe in lower level algebra. Personally, I wish I could get away from the damn quadratics and I'm not actually graphing anything right now (woo! applications problems in calculus!).

dc0785 -> RE: spelling (10/25/2007 1:04:22 PM)

I can only assume you are referring to me and I think it is cool.  It means someone actually read something I typed.  Ha.  I do think spelling is important however as we ALL know, not everyone is a perfect typist.  I try to capture what is trying to come out and I move on.  The thought is more important that perfect delivery.  Of course, attention to detail is a nice characterist but I have never created a great relationship with someone because of the attention to detail or fantastic penmanship.  Ha!  Just keeping it light.

dc0785 -> RE: spelling (10/25/2007 1:10:24 PM)

Everyone has their quirks.  Everything is like a thermostat...not everyone is comfortable.  Is spelling an issue that would really keep you from getting to know someone?
