Both profiles are very nice, and of course, I meant both of you....

Lunch would be my pleasure should either or both of you find yourself in my area.

I would be delighted to be able to accept such an offer from a gentleman, if only the miles did not separate us all.

How many lunatics does it take?

None

All of us are perfectly sane; it's those other people who are crazy

It's amazing how much ice you can break when you presume too much and place your foot firmly in your mouth.  I've been doing it all my life!

MsScarlet: liked  the point you made in the OP especially about those who complain that their profile has been viewed. I remember reading a thread along those lines.

After I had read your first post I bet my Teddy Bear a weeks supply of sweeties that you were a Brit.
I was right but Teddy wont pay up.Teddy says I looked underneath your pic but I swear I didnt.
Will you beat him for me ?

Just the way you constructed the post and of course some of the words you used. I suppose I could be wrong because I was surpised to learn that the Yanks use the word "geezer" which I thought was quintessentially (!!!) cockney.
If I am wrong its only technical, you must have lived in the UK a long time.
If that is not true then  you can beat me and I will never speak to Teddy again.

On the other hand, I've heard it said that the reason so many people are "insane" is that they are the ONLY ones who seem to notice how insane reality is and they can't cope. So... if I get this right, they are insane because they are the sanest of us all. As a result, they can't figure all of us, who are calling sane the insanity of this world out and they simply give up trying. We then, in our infinitely insane sanely pretending wisdom, declare them insane so that we don't have to recognize just how sane we've proclaimed actual insanity to be. The really really sane ones, we call dangerously insane and lock them away so that they won't interfere with our insanity in any sort of sane manner.

juliet

Frighteningly close to reality!

I still remember my first class on psychology.  The lecturer asked us what made the difference between him and us.  What gave him the power to say that we were all insane and he wasn't.  He described a scenario where he alone saw a snake on the floor and reacted and we didn't, so he diagnosed us all as insane.  He then described the opposite, that we all saw the snakes all over the floor but he didn't, again he told us we were the insane ones.

His final answer on what the difference is?  An A4 sheet of paper signed and framed on his wall which states he has the right to practice psychology and declare others insane.

Which observations put me in mind of this quote, which I have posted in my home,

"A psychotic is a guy who's just found out what's going on."
- William S. Burroughs

This quote always reminds me of a mentor of mine.  Ed, best to you, where ever you are!

Ok, for the sake of your not being beaten and Teddy and you continuing your obviously close and warm relationship I shall confess all.

I learned to speak English in England as my first language.  My mother was an Ashkenazi Jew via Glasgow, my father a part Maltese army brat from Dover, via Liverpool.  I lived my formative years in England, spending almost all of my school holidays in Switzerland speaking French.  I endured the British education system until the age of 14 when I began travelling all over, living in various other countries, going native and discovering that England is not the only flavour - nor indeed the best of them.

Technically I suppose I'm British, that is what it says in at least one of my passports, but I hate to be thought of as one.  I look at my fellow Brits and feel ashamed of their bigotry, xenophobia, agression and overall behaviour.  When I travel abroad I blend in, I learn the local ways and languages, eat the local food, and avoid the Brits wherever possible.  The thought that they will go abroad to complain about the food, the weather, the Germans, the locals, the beer - it disgusts me.  En masse, at their lowest level, they're a bunch of petty, whining idiots with whom I would rather not associate.  At their best they're just about tolerable.

Unfortunately this is where my mothers ashes are scattered, where my elderly father still lives, and where my partners family are settled.  That makes it a bit difficult to emigrate.  But once my father has gone, my partner and I are both of a mind to move on.  The question is, where - so many wonderful countries, so little time!

Humans will be humans. That said ~ I wouldn't let someone else's comment get your panties in a wad. I've had to stop letting the "lunitics" get to me because some of them do message you with rude, stupid or off the wall crap. As some of the other responses have mentioned.... ignore or block the air heads. If it's overly rude - spiteful or insulting... report it. Toodles ;)

Well MsScarlet you let it all out there didnt you lol. When Teddy read it he was quite upset and I had to comfort him so at least you have cemented our relationship.

I actually think your post is a little over the top with one exception and that is the aggression present in many young working class Brit. males. If the hard line middle classes  could rest control back from the PC pansies and harness some of that aggression maybe our economy would be in a much more robust state.

By the way I am of working class background and live in  but am not really a part of a modest respectable working class area.

Agreed. I pretend to be German when necessary.

Anything, to not be thought of as a Brit abroad.

Well, I'm glad at least that you and Teddy are back on good terms.  If only the economy could be wrangled back into shape with the same ease that we set the world to rights in our posts or in bars.

Unfortunately the great, unwashed masses (as they are often referred to over here) tend to be very tribal in nature.  They and their ofspring thrive on gossip, inuendo, agression and alcoholic furore.  I have travelled the length and breadth of Britain, having family over most of it, and I have to say the further you get from London the further you get from civilisation or an educated response to life.  There are whole cities over here that are filled with the kind of trogladite that you would never wish to meet.

I lived and went to school in what was then a very middle class area of London.  We were a mixed race school in a realtively wealthy area, and wanted for very little.  Yet racism was rife.  I was shocked when I started at the high school, because I'd played with all races at my little school and never realised they were different.  Suddenly I found myself under attack for having friend who were not white.

But I was also under attack because I was different.  I spoke several languages, I read books, I did my homework, I got good grades and I chose not to mix with many of the kids who thought it amusing to spray graffiti, damage property or otherwise run wild.  I had plenty of friends, and did lots of the usual social things, but we didn't feel the need to destroy things.

A lot of the children at this school came from a couple of nearby council estates, their families either knew each other or were related, and it made it difficult for people outside of that *group* because they would travel en masse and bully anyone who wasn't "one of them".  A situation that occurs in most places I guess, but this one, being British, had a particular bent to it.

I still remember one of the kids ending up in hospital.  He'd been a quiet kid, bookish, but accepted because he was the youngest of a family on the estate that were known for bouncing in and out of prison.  Most of these homes, the only reading matter you'd find would be the TV guide.  This kids Dad came home from the pub to find him doing his homework.  Dad lost it completely, accused the son of trying to be better than him, of looking down on the family, and beat the crap out of him.

It is these people who go to Spain and bellow along the beach like bull seals.  Who snap their fingers at waiters and yell "oy, Manuelle!" as though it was the only name ever granted to a Spaniard.  It is they who demand - yes, demand - fish and chips, pie and chips, sausage and mash, none of that foreign muck, a good curry like at home (and no, most British curry isn't Indian, it was created by the Brits who went out there).  It is they who drink steadily all day then wreak havoc in the nightclubs, screwing in the street, yelling loudly in quiet neighbourhoods, telling others to fuck off if they're asked to be quiet or swinging punches if they don't like the way you look at them.  It is they who vomit their guts up then go back for more.  They are the pint and a fight brigade who don't want to enjoy what the rest of the world has to offer.  They simply want what they enjoy at home, but with sunshine and sand.

When you've had your hard worked for 2 weeks in the sun destroyed by these yobboes, then perhaps you and Teddy will understand why so many Brits choose to dissociate themselves from the soccer lout, lager swilling mass culture of this country.
