I know some of you do it, I know, but this true story will put hair on your chest, curl it and then take it off.

I found a fatal flaw in my release system. I found it the easy way because I was not able to do it that night. Normally for release the ice would melt to the point where the key would pass though a lock hasp, giving a timed release. But today I didn't do it. I don't know the exact reason, but mainly it was too many peoople around. No matter what it did not happen.

The ice was in place however, and I decided to pull the key though the usual path. But what happened was that the key got caught. I thought it almost impossible. But it happened. The key is longer than the lock hasp's inner dimension. It was lodged there and would not move.

I tried many times, and it would not budge. It would not come through, it was situated cross wise.

Just a warning, no matter how mich you plan, things can still go worng. If I had gone through with it, I woul be stuck, really stuck. And I guess I would not be typing this now.

Anybody who does this, man I thought I had thought of everything, but now I know I didn't.

I don't quite understand what you're talking about, but self-bondage is always at or near the top of the fatalities list for BDSM.

Extreme restraints makes a self bondage release system that uses ice that suposedly makes it safer, i havnt inspected it myself so I cant say. But I havnt heard of any problems with it. Other than this one of course.  This is the kind of lock the OP is talking about. http://www.extremerestraints.com/self-bondage-time-lock_1457.html

Yeah, that's a pretty bad release mechanism. Glad you didn't find out the hard way!

I purchased this item, tested it about 20 times and then finally used it successfully without a backup.  I'm STILL not convinced it's 100% safe though.  The only sure releases are ones that are easily reached without a gimmick, but even then---locks jam, keys break,  limbs go numb and shit happens.

I've seen that device, and it really doesn't seem to be much different than timecuffs. But it is more versatile, to say the least.

It may be a good thing to look into something alot more failsafe like that.

As much as self-bondage may seem appealing, i wouldn't recommend it. Even if there was a device that was absolutely guaranteed to release in say one hour, what would happen if there was a sudden, very bad fire five minutes into the time period. You'd be dead long before the device unlocked. Even if Y/you don't have a partner, at least find a friend who is willing to sit by to assist if things go very wrong. Remember, safe, SANE, consensual.

Which  shows that yould never (and don't often use that word) do self-bondage and rely on a single release mechanism. Always use a backup (like a bucket of nasty stuff with a key in it) to get you loose if your primary mechanism fails or if the houses is on fire. Better yet, have someone nearby who knows what you're doing and who can release you in case of emergency.

I haven't used it yet, but I made my own ice lock. The one that extremerestraints has looks beautiful and all...but $194? Ouch. I'd rather invest in more whips.

All I did was cut off a small section of PVC pipe and capped both ends. I drilled a few holes in one end and stuffed some parachute cord into it in a loop. So outside the "lock" is a loop of cord, and inside is just two exposed ends. Fill with ice and freeze. Voila! Instant lock.

When frozen, the ice securely holds the cord in place. When it melts, you can just pull the thread out. Nothing to get stuck on it, other than ice clumping around the cord, so I think it's a pretty safe design. You can vary the length of time by varying the amount of water in the pipe, or using pipes of different sizes.

Caveats -

I don't know how much of a mess it's going to make when the water starts leaking. The top of the lock is -not- waterproof due to the holes that the cord passes through. The rest is fine, though. It might be good to have it placed in a bucket, or at least always oriented so the holes are on top.

I also don't know how long it'll take to melt. For all I know the PVC will provide enough insulation to make it last forever. So testing is, of course, a necessity.

It's not a terribly pretty looking lock. Might be nicer painted black.

But at the end of the day, it's $7 for parts to make one, so if all it takes is a little experimentation to make it work safely, it seems worth it.

Maybe I'm over-simplifying, and I've never tried self-bondage, but why not tie a string to each of the keys for the lock, freeze the keys in whatever size block of ice you desire, and tie the other end of each string in a spot you can reach and manipulate with your fingers...nothing to jam, nothing to lose, two keys for backup....practice in advance with locks unlocked...seems to me that it would work.

I take no responsibility for this half-baked advice...use at your own risk...your mileage may vary!

way back when i first got involved in bondage my first dominant refused to even begin tying the ropes until all his quick release materials were right within easy reach, keys, scissors, knives, whatever he needed. his big thing was safety first and it came in handy the one day i was in suspension and passed out.  i could never consider doing self bondage after that.  and like a previous poster said, god forbid a fire broke out.  just seems too risky to do alone, if you need to continue, find someone who will agree to check up on you after x amount of time or be in the next room should problems develop.

I came close to failing to get out. Suspended, inverted, with motorcycle gloves, handcuffed & dropped the keys !. Luckily, I was able to lower myself to the floor and wriggle around till I could get the keys. I have had a lot of experience working on cars where I can't see. This was of imense help !. I have found where I belong now though, so have move on :-) .

I do not think this sounds like a good idea no matter how one slices it ... unless it is important for one's emotional well being to engage in self bondage, I just do not understand why people take such risks...

I am required to wear my ankle and wrist cuffs to bed, but I do not have to restrain myself with them...

Perhaps if one had leather wrist restraints with a pair of cutting shears near by so they could cut themselves loose?

sometimes my need to be bound is overwhelming, and if i'm alone and not in a relationship, i just tie my legs to a chair or my ankles together, something that i could easily undo if i needed to.  it isn't full restraint, but it is enough and it is safe at least.
